A middle-aged man named John Car- ■ mody was admitted to the hospital to-day with his thfoat cut, and was at once taken to the'' operating room to have his wounds stitched up. The ease is one of attempted miicide. Carmody appeared before the ■ court this morning on a charge of vagrancy, haying been found bv night on the enclosed premises of St. Helens Hospital, where he had greatly frightened seme of the inmates, and was sentenced *to 14 days' imprisonment. He y:i.? seemingly a halfcrazy individual, evidently suffering from the effects of drink. Soon after being sentenced he seized an opportunity to creep out of the prisoners' room and make a dash for the courthouse door. He was promptly secured, and returned to the room. The unhappy sequel occurred soon after the prisoner's arrival at Mount Eden Gaol, where he apparently got hold of a broken bottle and attempted to end his life by cutting his throat. • It is understood that tho injuries are of a very dangerous nature. ' WAITAKI RIVER TRAGEDY. GIRL DROWNED WHILE BATHING. (Per United Press Association.) OAMARU, January 4. A drowning fatality occurred at the Waitaki River at 5 o'clock this afternoon near Georgetown, 18 miles from Oamaru, in which. Mary Elizabeth Dromgoole, a 14-year-qld daughter of a farmer living in the vicinity, lost her life. Three girls were , 'bathing in the river,_aiid one got into difficulties. ' Another girl went to her assistance, but' failed to reach her mate, and only just managed to reach the river bank herself.
