SACKING THE LADY DOCTOR
Because of her 1 recent marriage, 'Dr Gladys Miall-Smith, assistant medical office! for maternity and child welfare to .St. Pancras Corporation, has been called on to resign her post, and has refused, on the grounds:— *
That resignation on marriage was not a condition of her engagement. 1 That there had been no resolution, passed by the council requiring women to resign on marriage. That the Sex Disqualification (Removal) Act lays down the principle that sex or marriage shall not bo a disqualification in regard to the exercise of any publio function. '■
“T’he matter is not one for regulation, but, for common sense,” says the_ Evening Standard. “If a married woman is so situated that she can, in fact, carry on her profession efficiently, she is likely, to be the most efficient kind of professional woman, being a more complete human being than her single sister. But, clearly, she cannot at the same time manage a_ considerable family and a considerable business.”
