SOUTHLAND RACES. SILENT KING WINS THE OUP. (From Our Own Reporter.) INVERCARGILL, January 3. , Tho Southland Racing Club’s suwuiior meeting opened in fine weather, and there was a large attendance. The track carried a good sole of grass, and looked in fine order, but walking the course prior to the meeting found the going a bit uneven. Sunny Loch was unlucky to miss the chief event, as a cross by Songbird early in tho race cost him throe lengths, and when striding up to challerige tho some horse about 100 yards from home Peart’s whip either struck him or went sufficiently dose to cause him to throw up his head and momentarily hang in his stride.- This made the difference between success and defeat. Peart, the rider of Songbird, was before the stewards and dismissed, but later in tho day he was cautioned for crossing and making injudicious use of his whip. He was lucky not to be stood down for a period. Silent King’s display was in marked contrast to his form in the Wyndham Cup, and also at. Wingatui, but in keeping with his form at the New Zealand Cup meeting. Most of his supporters, who had followed him since Riccarfon, deserted him to-day. Eleus, who wont out second favourite, ran a bad race, but General Advance was battling on. Bon Spec won from end to end, and Silver Peak, after being slow on her logs at the start, ran a good race to get close up third. Mr A. D. MTvor’s starting waa an improvement on his work at Wyndham, but he was somewhat slow in his methods. The starting, however, ranks as a decided improvement on what has latterly been witnessed on tho same courseDuring the day £26,959 10s went through tho totalisator, or £BSBB less than last year.
