Two well-known Ashburton residents were the victims of the old droppcd-coin hoax in Havelock street last week, but before the little joke was ended it was back on its small perpetrators. The alluring tinkle of a coin on the footpath at once fired the two gentleman with an ambition not to lose tho money which the gods had sent, and a vast expenditure of matches began in a vain search for the money. One of the parties at, last oast his eyes suspiciously on the ihigli mocrooarpa fence abutting on the footpath, and. as another match was lighted, spoke in loud tones to his companion ; “Don’t waste this match If you cannot find the coin, set a light to tho fence.” The effect was insto atsmixm.", a chorus of soared juvenile voir--is frevr; behind the fence adjuring the adults not to do that. These latter went ?wov cisnckSug at the pleasant little denouement.
