OTAGO DBAWS WITH CANTERBURY. The Hatch Cup, for the primary schools' in torpid vincial championship of iNew Zen* land, was won by Otago last year from Canterbury. On Friday evening last a Canterbury chullego team arrived at Dunedin for the purpose of regaining the coveted cup. The two "rep" teams met "on the Caledonian Ground on Saturday afternoon, in perfect weather. 'lhe game resulted in a draw, so the cup will remain with Otago. The spectators were treated to a really good exhibition of hookey, with plenty of excitement thrown in. ISiegame was very evenly contested, both sides being keen and eager for victory. Burton, Gardiner, and M'Donald were the pick of the local boys, while A damson and Howison were the mainstay -of the visitors. The game was a very clean one, and was played in the best of spirit. The following were, the teams : Otago (white).—W. Davies, goalkeeper: A. Timms and R Harris, backs; A. Kilpatrick, E. Bolton (captain), and S. M'Kano, halves; K. M'Donald, J. West, E. Rennick. R. Brown, and H. Gardiner, forwards. Canterbury (blue and red). —P. Copp, goalkeeper; S Crozier and L. Sutherland, backs; B. Smith. J. Howison. and J. M'Nulty. halves; A. Serett, W. Buchanan, D. Adamson, R. Carmichael, and L. Snelling, forwards. The opening was sensational, as Canterbury rushed the ball from the initial bully to the oirole. and Snelling soored before the Otago boys had thoroughly realised that the game had started. The play hung in midfield for a while, the two centre halves, Bolton a-rd Howison: being prominent, for good work. An Otago passing rush between M'Donald, West, ind Rennick was held up by the excellent defence of Crosier and - Sutherland. Gardiner put in a fim> run up the left wing and after passing to Brown, be received the ball back and scored Otago's first goal Canterbury ... 1 Otago ... 1 TThe play now livened up and became fast and exciting. Adamson headed several Canterbury rushes, but on reaching the oircle his shots were smothered by the Otago backs, Timms and Harris. Bolton was using good judgment in feeding the Otago forwards, and the p'ay continued to be of a very open nature. The remainder of the spell was very evenly contested, but no further score resulted, before half-time wai onlled, with tho sooro. 1 all. Petaltjes for obstruction against Otago gav» Canterbury the advantage in the opening Btages of the second spell, but over""eagerness by tho visitors spoiled their chances. Smart runs by the Otago wing forward*. Gardiner and M'Donald,, transferred the play. The ball travelled from M'Donald to West and then on to Rennick, who cleverly took the ball in midair and sent it crashing into the top corner of the net—a brilliant goal. Otago ./ 2 Canterbury ... 1 Otago continued to press and another goal was narrowly averted, Copp saving in good style and Crozier eventually relieving with a long hit. Headed by Adamson and Serett. Canterbury set up a series of dangerous attacks. Adamson missed an almost certain score by giving "siicks." Canterbury were now having the better of the. play, till another penalty for "sticks" sent them back. Good play by Bolton sent the Otago forwards upfleld with a pretty passing rush between Brawn, Rennick, and West, but Renniok'a shot was brilliantly stopped by Copp, the Canterbury custodian, who kicked out to thejino. Howison and Smith gained ground for the visitors by well placed passes. Adamson and Buchanan took the. ball to the circle, but the Otago goalie, made a great save and conceded a. corner which was fruitless. Canterbury's efforts were eventually rewarded by Adamson running through and scoring. Otago 2 Canterbury. ... ... 2 With a few irdnutos to-go, and the scores even, the play became very exciting. Bolton and M*lCane slopped a Canterbury rush, whidh was headed by Adamson f who was playing a groat game. In spite of tho strenuous efforts, no further score resulted, and the game ended in a dtt,v;, each side scoring two goals. On leaving the field both teams had .an excellent reception for their splendid d:splay. ' ,*$ Messrs W. H. Down and R. A. Wallace were the referees. • SECONDARY SCHOOLS' MATCH. As a curtain-r«isbr to the Hatch Cup game the Otago secondary sohools' representatives met a teau iroro the Christchurch Technical College. At half-time Otago were leading by 2 goals (scored by M'Cl&thy and Smith) to nil. In the second half Archer scored for Canterbury and Gardiner for Otago. Otago thus won by 3 goals to 1. Messrs T. S. Mitchell and J Hogg were the referees. LADIES' HOCKEY CHAMPIONSHIP. OTAGO BEATS MANAWATTJ. (PER UKTTKTS Prhsb ASSOCTAtION.) PALMERSTON N., September 10. The New Zealand ladies' hockey championship tournament was commenced here to-day. There are 14 teams in the competition. The results to date,of section play are as follow: Wairarapa 3, beat Feilding nil; Hawke's Bay A 3, beat Wanganui nil. Otago 9, boat Manawatti B 1. Hawkes Bay B 3, beat Auckland 2. Wellington 8, beat Marlborough 1. The tournament will last a week.
