CATTLE STEALING
REMANDED FOR SENTKNOE;;; (Pee United Peess Association^ MASTERTON, September 11. Roy Bateup and Roy Wiirahurst were found guilty of cattle-stealing by the Supreme Court, and remanded for sentence till Monday. With reference to a recommendation for mercy to Wilmhuret on account, of his youth and low intelligence, Mr Justice Salmond sa.id it - was' the first time in his experience in which an accused hadi had the assurance, not to say the audacity, to go into the box and try to make the jury believe he was an innocent maxi wrhbn two written confessions had been handed in. Both men were admittedly liars, continued Mr Justice Salmond, in summing, up, and Bateup, by his own confession, was also not only a, liar but a forger os well.. He bad forged documents, told lies, and deceived police, and Wilmhurst in two formal admissions had confessed his gnilt. He had not the least doubt one of them stole the cattle. After a retirement of li hours the jury returned a vfrdict of guilty.
