SPORTING,

OTAGO HUNT CLUB RACES,

A SUCCESSFUL MEETING

The Otago Hunt Club was unlucky in ithe fact that rain set in in the forenoon, and no doubt the threatening weather was responsible fur keeping many people away from Wingnlui on Saturday afternoon. Despite the uninviting morning, however, there was an excellent attendance, and patrons were rewarded for their courage hv not only seeing some interesting racing, l.'ut they also had the pleasure of enjoying it under a bright sun, which made the afternoon quite warm and euir.merlike. Some fair-sized fields wero seen cut, but the cross-country horses wero rather a poor lot. Mr W. Rudkin made his debut as a starter of gallopers, and on the whole acquitted himself fairly well. Tho track was in excellent order, and the card was cot off without serious injury to any of tho riders who lost their seats in the saddle. The management of the meeting had matters working smoothly, and gave thoir patrons a good day's varied sport. Pamplona was elected a strong favourite for the Hunters' Hurdles, but he was seriously interfered with by Red Fire, who bumped his rider off at the stand hurdle and Hocked the favourite and lost him several lengths. Pamplona rather hurriedly made up ground, and was in charge at the five-furlong post, where he dwelt and lost ground. Orange then took charge, and won after stalling off Downstroke, who had made up a lot of ground over the last half-mile. The mix-up to the favourite cost him a good chance of success, but none of the others were dangerous over the last half-rnile. Strowana. stopped badly alter being in charge in the early part ot the race. , Backers went strongly for Kilcullen _in the Jockey Club Stakes, the filly carrying nearly three times as much support as Filagree, who went out second choice. They got away to a good start, from which Kilcullen was first to show out. Galway carried her along up to the straight, with Mirza in close attendance. Kilcullen was momentarily in charge at the distance, where Mirza put in a claim. A good finish mw Galway wear down Kilcullen and beat her a short, half-length, with Mirza a neck away third, and then close up came Rex Sylv'a, Osterman, and St. Augustine. lie others never threatened .danger. lhe favourite looked a shade on the big side in condition, and although ' carefully handled, just failed to sec out her task. A field of seven saddled up for the Otago Hunt Club Cup. in which Likelihood was sent out a rather better favourite than ' Luigi. Tho favourite tipped out at the first fence, and Luigi, Traditor, and Silver Top were responsible for carrying on the pace to the stand double. Luigi resumed command after landing over the sod wall, and finally beat Dardanelles by three lengths. Traditor was a bad third. Silver Top came down at the first of the double in the back stretch. Both the unshipped riders escaped injury. Tairiui completed the course a long way back. All on the card went to the post for the Kennels Handicap, and backers concentrated their attention on Listening lost and Sunny Coiner. They were sent away from a moving start, in which Kilboyno got an advantage, and was followed by Listening Post, the pair being well clear in the first few strides, whilst Night Alarm, .lock, and Multiplication/were slowest to <-et going. Listening Post and Kilboyne Were still well clear at the far turn, and turning for home Satisfaction, Sunny Corner, and Bebehead were improving their position. Kilboyno retired when heads were straightened for home, and Listening Post, shaking off Satisfaction, won nicely by a length. Bebehead waa a short length away, third, and Sunny Corner another two lengths off. fourth. _ Isla Wilke3 was a strong order in the Wingatui Trotting Handicap. She, however, broke up when in charge aftev going a furlong and a-half and again when turning out of the straight. Meanwhile Bronwood and Indian Child were showing the way along tho back, whilst Silver Shoe had moved up to a position near the leaders. Isla Wilkes got going and was making up ground at the finish, but Indian Child won comfortably by four lengths from the favourite, who beat Silver Shoe a similar distance, with Bronwood next. The Maiden Steeples proved to bo a chapter of accidents. Canbinia and Dusky ran off the course after leading the way over tho first jump. Cappa dropped his rider at 'the water-jump, and Likelihood ran off at the stand double and was followed by Tahuna and Browmving. Heroic and Castle Bar went on, but both refused twice at the post and rails. Castle Bar then got over and went on from Brownwing and Heroic, whilst Tahuna was following on a long way behind. Castlo Bar kept going and won by 12 lengths from Browmving, who beat Heroic by 200yds. Tho Vauxhall Hack Handicap field waa partially filled up with several green performers and backers singled out Lomagundi and Filagree. They were sent away from a fair lino from which Matata and Ruena were smartest away from Filagree who, however, soon faded, out. Kilroy, Bonny Olive.- and Lomagundi were handy to the leaders over the first three furlongs. Lomagundi joined the leaders before reaching the straight, and in a good finish beat Ruena a head, whilst Matata was a nock away third with Otermun making up ground a length away. The card concluded with nine going to the post for the Hunters' Plate, and Grim Joke went out the "best backed horse of the day. The favourite was always handy •until reaching the straight where Red Book took charge, but finally failed to withstand the challenge from War March, who came with a well-timed run and won by a head. Red Fir/; was about two lengths away just in front of Clavcrhouse, and then came Grim Joke. The amount put through the machine came to £17,258, as compared with £16,366 for the meeting last year.
