NOTES FROM LAKE WAKATIPU

(Feom Our Own Correspondent.) QUEENSTOWN, September 10. Telephonic communication between Queenstown and Dunedin was successfully inaugurated yesterday. This means that Arrow town and all other of the Lakes district as well, can call up Dunedin at any time during business _ hours and carry on conversation. Dunedin, in turn, can call up this end. The district has waited patiently for years for such facilities, and it is at least gratifying that the TelegrapTi Department has at last "hitched” us on to the chief town of the provincial district. Thee is no doubt that the concession will prove a great boon in business circles, and it is likely that advantage will be largely taken of this speaking circuit. The distance between Queenstown and Dunedin is just under the 150 mi'es. which entitles subscribers to speak for three minutes for 2s 3d. Much credit is due to Mr Vcitch, telegraph engineer, Dunedin, for his efforts in this much-needed extension of our telephone system. At a meeting of residents, held last evening, it, was decided to enlist the services of a district nurse for Queenstown and immediate district.

The Wakatipu Horticultural Society, which has just held its annual meeting, has decided to hold spring and summer shows. Mr M... J* .Gavin, who has taken a very active part, in the affairs of the soccity for many years and has been president for several terms, is unable, through severe illness, to take any part this year. The society expressed its appreciation of Mr Gkvin’s services, and the secretary was instructed to send a letter of sympathy to him. liTr D. F. Sutherland has been elected _ president for the ensniner term. Wo have had a spoil of dry weather, lastin" over a week, and_ the warm sunshine has brought on vegetation to an appreciable extent. Spring flowers aro beginning to show up in the gardens. The glassi is still very high. Quite a largo number of visitors (for this time of the year) have been staying in the town during the lost fortnight or so. Several of the boardinghouses are already booking up for the coming tourist season.
