AMATEUR ATHLETICS.

PORT CHALMERS-DUNEDIN ROAD RACE.

The first Port Chalmers-Dunedin road race since 1914 was run on Saturday alternoon under the control of the Otago Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association. The trophy is the Hooper Challenge Cup, whiou was presented to the Dunedin Harriers’ Club m 1902 for annual competition. The race was won easily by R. Monaghan (St. Patrick’s) lin' 48min 31 4-ssec, with a iiandicap of smin. * The competitors lined *up for the start at the foot of George street, Port Chalmers, at 3.30 p.m., when the limit man, Monaghan was despatched. The field, which numbered 15 competitors in ell, were sent off on their journey in order of their handicaps. The scratch man started a few minutes before the train which took the officials and spectators to the finishing point at Pelichet Pay. The race, as viewed trom Sawyer’s Bay, showed that the limit man had made good use of his handicap, being then about 50yds ahead of MTlroy, who was the same distance ahead of Phillips. Crossing the Sawyer’s Bay tunnel hill the field was well strung out, and here the scratch man made use of a short cut and gained considerable ground. Passing through St. Leonards, Monaghan still led, but MTlroy, appeared to be slowly gaining ground, closely followed by Dewar, Phillips had now dropped well to the rear, but Bramwell and Edmond were running strongly some 300yds behind. By this time Frye had closed up, and was lying in sixth plad®, but ’an ill-timed attempt to force the pace caused him to sacrifice his chances. At 4 p.m. Monaghan was running well, passed Burkes station about 150yds ahead of MTlroy, who was followed by Dewar, Bramwell, Edmond, and Frye, After passing Ravensboucne, Bramwell ran into second place, and led MTlroy and Edmond. Bramwell was now running well, but the distance bad begun to tell on the remainder of the field, which was strung out over half a mile. Entering the straight for home the same order was maintained, but MTlroy had fallen back to fifth place. At the finish Monaghan’s lead was such that the second man never came within challenging distance, and Monaghan breasted the tape first amid the applause of the spectators who bad assembled in some considerable numbers to witness the result.
