ECONOMY CAMPAIGN

STARTLING RECOMMENDATIONS. ABOLITION OF LABOUR EXCHANGES. Preou Association— By Tofcgraph—Copyright. LONDON, Sep'tember 8. Sir Eric Geddes's Business Men's Economy Committee has found ways of saving £100,000,000 in the next Estimates. The committee's main recommendation is the abolition of labour exchanges. It admits that some local machinery will be necessary while the Government continues to pay unemployment insurance, but it believes that it can be done simply and cheaply. The committee made startling recom-* mentations for economising in Mesopotamia and Palestine, but this will involve an important reconsideration of Cabinet policy. Other recommendations are drastic economies in expenditure on the army and on naval dockyards.

It is hoped to economise further by a reduction in the cost anjl size of the civil service, though difficulties are expected to be encountered.—A. and N.Z. Cable.
