SWIMMING CARNIVAL
A natatorial display to wind up the season was given at the Y.M.C.A. baths on Saturday nighf to wind up the season The competitive events were not taken too seriously by those who took part, but the numerous spectators were given full value for their money, both in the . quality of the an f in the humour imparted into them. One « the most interesting items was an exhibition of the evolution of swimming from dogpaddling, through the breast stroke, under■,arm side stroke, overarm side stroke, and the trudgeon to the present culminating point for speed; the Australian crawl, which Barney Kiernau, of _ Sydney, introduced A display of life-saving by different methods was watched with interest. The Corfu dive (in which those who took pait plun-ed from the end of the bath, swam under water, and endeavoured to emerge with head and arms through a lifebuoy) was also an interesting display, and the egg and spoon race was made the vehicle for a considerable amount of amusing by-play. In opening the carnival the president of the Swimming Chib (Mr W. Fleming) announced that it was arranged to help to clear off the small deficiency left after the previous carnival. This, he was pleased to say, would he wiped off, and a small surplus left towards the next carnival.-(Applausc. Mr Fleming then presented to Mr J. Doake the cuu for the Y.M.C.A. 100 yards championship. Ho congratulated him on winning it, and expressed a hope that he would have a- good tussle to retain it. He also presented to a friend, for Mr Cr. M. Graham,, the cup won by him for the 100 yards breast stroke. Following are the results of the oompeti--40 Yards Handicap.—First heat: Hopkins 1 B Cnlder and Smith (dead heat) 2, Second heat: M'Gill 1, G. Calder 2. Third heat: Doake 1. Bates 2. Fourth heat: Heany 1, M'Nulty 2. First semi-final: Hopkins 1, M'Nulty 2. Second semi-final; Keesing 1, Doake 2. Final ; Kcesing and Hopkins (dead heat) 1, M'Nulty 2, Junior 40 Yards.—'Wyllie 1, Stubbs 2. Fancy Diving.—Doake 1, Keesing 2. Nino competitors. 1 60 Yards Breast Stroke.—First heat; Hams 1, Allan 2. Second heat, Doake and McGill (dead heat) 1, James 2. No final. Long Plunge.—Keesing 1, M. Harris 2. Seven competitors. Plate Dive.—Gillies (8) 1, M'Nulty (G) 2, Allan (5), 3. Relay Race.—Residents (Maoan, 11. Cakler, Bates, M'Donald) 1, Swimmers (Doake, Allan, M'Nulty, Hopkins), 2. Four teams competed. The carnival concluded with displays of porpoise diving (followed by a 20yd» swim, feet foremost), throwing the polo ball, and “follow the leader.”
