BRISBANE, December 20. Details of tho Port Darwin riot 6ho\v that a mob of 700, headed by a motor carrying Dr Gilruth's efligy, marched to Government House. After listening to Dr Gilrnth they swarmed into the grounds, broke the windows, and disarmed the police of their rifles. Tho effigy was then burnt. The causo of the violence "was Dr Gilruth s refusal to depart bv the next steamer
(Received Dec. 20, at 9.25 p.m.) The trouble at Port Darwin had been seething for weeks over the increased price of beer. The hotels had been boycotted for the past 15 days. During the riot firearms and bludgeons were freely used. Dr Gilruth managed to escape after a rough handling. The town is now quiet.
