WHAKATANE, December 19 Tho Commonwealth and Dominion liner Port Sydney arrived this morning- from Sydney direct, bringing 31 passengers. All were landed here. The majority left for Rotorua in motor cars. The passengers include Mr J. Hislop, Under-seeretary of Internal Affairs, and his wife. The loading of meat has commenced. It is expected to tako three days. WESTPORT, December 19.
Tho dredge Eileen Ward was safely floated off last night; The Harbour Board will hold an inquiry. Captain .Simpson, roaster of the dredge, attributes the mishar> to a • gale, strong current, and sea. The hoard will also hold an inquiry regarding the recent Kakapo incident, when the steamer put back to Nelson with influenza on board, and tho second mate- (Mr Duncan) died.
INVERCARGILL, December 19. Leslie Greig and Otto Muir, two youths, have been committed for trial at Invercargill on a charge of tho theft of a motor car and petrol. Greig stated to the police that they were going to the Sounds, but tho journey was too desolate, and they came back. Greig was also charged on six counts with breaking, entering, and theft and was committed for trial. '
