NOTE'S ON THE RACING. (FhOM Oua SI'ECIAI fiEI'ORTEB.) CHRISTCHURiCH, lNovomber 4. Vacuum was sent out a hot chance for the Spring Jlurdlies, but his rider elected to stay with Good Hop© of setting a solid paoe, and after the favourite had peeked at tho last fence, Good Hope boat ihim for speed in the run .home. The tactios adopted with tho favourite sacrificed a winning chance. St. Kevin, who has been under tlio baa for five yeaa-a, was not iible 10 pace it with the others. Good Hope jumped much better than he did in Duiedin; but at one flight of the hurdles Vacuum gaanedi four or five lengths in crossing the obstacle. Cooing got well out in the Spring Plate, and JiLaiee, who was a strong iavcunto, was baidly plaoed, a long way back irom the leadens, when they bad run about a furlong. Royal Star was too far out. Ajgidus and Braid were prominent in the early stages, with Onslaught and Maieiha handy. Melee made up a lot of ground, and got near the loaders ait the turn, but could not oome on. Karo fell at the distance, where Onslaught and Alaioha ising'ied themselves out, tho former won wii_h something to spare by a long ' neck. Sabine finished about three lengths away, with Moutoa Ivanova, and lionville next.

Taunnha was a strong order for the Linwood Handicap, in which he was always well placed, and he won well at the finich Claverhouse and Spyglass ran a good race, and tho la iter just beat the Dunedin horse Sleepy Head for third place. Oratress, First Salute, and Wild Knight were close up. KiUeny appeared to get a bad passage when turning into the straight.

A long dolay occurred in balancing the investments on the New Zealand Cup. TCil. lard was tho only one to be struck out of those who coloured on the card. Mazamo and Dusky Eve shewed the way past vhe stand, with Kilrush, Masoot, and Snub well up. Snub was always going well, but got badly placed rounding the top turn. .Turning for home, llorke's Drift had joined Kilrush in the load, and Menelaus, who was a good way from the leaders, commenoed a forward move. Inside the distanoe Sasanof came through on the rails, and won well by nearly four lengths from Rose Pink. Menelaus and . Battle Song were finishing very fast, but their effort was too late. Rorke'a Drilt and Kilrusli faded out in the run from the distance. Rose Pink ran a good race, but at the business end nothing had a chance with _ the winner. Menelaus would have been dangerous if better plaoed half a mile from home. Battle Song was also putting in good work, but his effort was too belated. Snub might have neared tho money, but even when going strongly along the bock he got into a bad position. A stronger pace would have beUer miited both Jfcnelaus and Snub. The first mile took lmin 45sec to cover. Sasanof holds tho unique distinction of winning both tho Melbourne Cup and the New Zealand Cup. Client was never notioed after going six furlongs, when he was galloping strongly. The investments 011 the race totalled £10,757 10s. Royal Step played up a good deal at the barrier for the "Welcome S.akes, in which tho first to show out were Mairihiku and Affectation, with Warplane and Surveyor close up. Inside tho dis ance Surveyor stayed on well, and beat Warplane by a long neck. Affectation was about the same distanoe away, with Amythus and Bitholia next. Surveyor was not too well placed in tho first couple of furlongs, and cs he stayed on in a pleasing style, he promises to develop into a good 'coll. Royal Stag was rnidly placed on tho outside at tho tauxiei, &~kd nover shewed up in the race.

Gloaming captured the Darby very canvfortably, and finished on strongly. A good race for eeoond place saw Kilmoon jnet best Hcatlieroote. Scornful stopped after Betting the pace until seven furlongs from home. Tho field in the Stewards' Handicap got well away, and tlio first to hit the straight were Ina-h and Mortham, with Acre and Hymestra. At the distance, the Dunedin mo/re Micliaela sliot to the front, and keeping olear, won by a good two lengths from Good Day. 80-peep, Inah, Parisian Diamond, and Damien wore all close up, and just behind tliem came Kilboyne. Parisian Diamond was regarded as a sure winner, but nothing had a ohsmco with the winner, who put up half a stone to secure Bmmerson's eenricos. In the Riooarlan Welter Sedd-el-Bahr was knocked right back at the rise of the barrier. Matty led tho way to the straight, where Punlon. took charge and finally won by a length from Sedd-el-Bahr, who ran a really good raoe in making up a lot of ground. Sir Fanciful also ran a good race. Linden looked dangerous at the turn, but was badly placed cm the ou'side of the fieldi John Barleyoorn looked to have a chance at the turn, but failod at tho busine6s end. THE V.R.C. RACES. NEW ZEALAND BURSES CRITICISED. SYDNEY, November 4. The sporting critics consider tho Victorian Derby a muddling affair, and nothing like the test for the Blue Riband that it is intended to bo. Fin mark was beaten because the race resolved itself into a five-furlong splint preoeded by a canter. Finxnark's con, ncctions are blamed far scratching the pacemaker Killowne immediately before the Derby was run. This action, it is thought, ocet Finroark the raoe. Although Magpie waa not all out in defeating Desert Gold by a neck, the writers applaud the maje'a gameness after setting a terrific pace. . The Sydney Morning Herald describes tile early going in the Derby as little better than a oanter. Outlook and Eusebiua weio prominent to the back stretch, where Finmark moved up, Ou.look led round ihe turn and to the half-distance, but Buseb.us ou;. him down, and won by a narrow margin. It was the slowest-run Derby sinoe 1900, the first half-mile taking lmin 4sec, the second Sosec.. the third 48£ sec, the last six furlongs lmin 13isec. The Telegraph ©ays: Tailing advantage of the absurdly dawdling pace, Lewis (on Outlook) made a sprint for the winning post, but Eusebius also put on the pace, and a fine finishing effort landed him a winner. In the Melbourne Stakes the crowd witnessed a thrilling run between ihe redoubtable Magpie and the Now Zealand champion, and it was only by a neck she succumbed to tlie good-looking Englishman, who is one of tho best horses seen here for many a day. Describing the Melbourne Stakes, the Herald says: Desert • Gold led to tho die ance, where Magpie joined her. Tlie pair fought out a brilliant bn tie. Tho race was run at. a solid pace throughout, the time being only a quarter of a second outside the record. —Press Assn. MELBOURNE TRAINING NOTES. MELBOURNE, November 4. At Fleming-ton King Offa beat Escomb over six furlongs in lmin 18sec. Seldsom. equalled Killowen over six in lmin 21sec. Prince Viridis ran 12 furlongs in 2min 51sec. Prince Bardolpli, nan a mile on the sand in lmin 47sec. Finmark, Desert Gold, and Estland did serviceable work. At Caulfield Eusebius did four furlongs in BQsec, Lingerie six in lmin 19sec, and Druinore four in 52sec. NEW ZEALAND TROTTING MEETING. (Ksb Unitsu Pnsss Associatios.) CHRISTCHTTRCH, November 4. Matchlight was worked out over a mile and arh-alf yestorcJay, and got to the end of tho journey in 3min 22sec, which Bryoe considers very satisfactory. Oinako, whom knowing ones gave a big chance in the Now Zealand Trotting Cup, is now a doubtful starter. After a fast workout on Saturday, it was found that one of his front 1-egs had filled.'
