DUNEDIN COURSING CLUB.

AUGUST MEETING. The weather ■was very cold, a/r.d from a spectator's point of view altogether undesirable, yesterday for the first day of the Dunedin Plum/p-ton Coursing Club's August meeting. At tho same time, it was quite admirable e or coursing in itself, Ukj only drawback being a rather dull light that ma<fo it difficult for tho dogs to pick up their game. The plumpton wag in t good going order, and the sport was of an interesting nature, one or two courses arousing considerable enthusiasm among the spectators. Among "the dogs competing on .this oocasion were Night Attack, Seaplane, and Forward March, from W<mganui; Dorothy; from Lower Hnti; Queen C«Jd and Midnight March, from Nelson; and. Comedietta* from' Wellington. The others belongedl to Dunedin or Southland. The useful megaphone, usually operated by Mr TT. Divers, was missing, and what was toruispirmg was not consequently too clear. Mr J. Ronald acted as judge and "MV J. Smith as slipper. Seaplane boat Nigger MinstieL Quickstep beat Queen Card. 0 Erin's Isle beat Forward March. Dorothy beat Night Attack. Full Hand; beat Spanowhawk. In the first round! of the. Challenge State Sunbeam won on speed, being some. 18 or 20 lengths in front of Springfield Lass when the game was turned. A quick kill terminated the course. Country Girl ran right away from Norman' Tuckfield in the lead up, and did nearly all the work—that is, up to a point soon to be reached, in which both dogs tired too much to do more than chase at a respectful distance. Norman" Tuckfield must have picked upfwondeTfully in the later work, as he was awarded the win. There was a fine run upi, between New Chum and Seaplane, it being just a little difficult to say which got there first. The course was a good one, though short, both dogs being yigorous over their work, and never showing any sign of fatigue. Both kept unusually clcse on the hare, which was killed. Onward an<s Nigger Minstrel ran an undecided course. In the run off Onward led by a small margin, but waj3 eclipsed by Nigger Minstrel in the subsequent work, who wound up with ■ a kill. A no-oourse "was signalled between Croix d'Or and Quickstep, and on the dogs being returned to the slips and again released Quickstep reached the hare first when near the slips and turned. Very little work followed before the hare escaped. Card and G-rand Marcih ran an. undecided. On being reslipped Queen Card passed Grand March in the run up, and led by a small margin, and turned. Grand March then took possess ion for a brief team, but Queen Card regained possession, and after putting in some good work concluded with ai kill. Forward March ran" an accidental bye. Erin's Isle led Midnight March and turned. Then Midnight March secured three turns, Erin's Isle afterwards coming in and terminating with a kill. Dorotby led Bright Alice, a kill resulting from the course. Nigbt Attack and Dash Kaka ran a no-course, and were returned to the slips. In the run oS N'ight Attaok led, and after an interesting course gained the judge's verdict. Full Hand led Comedietta by half a do.zen lengths, and did all the work in a long Uii?d. trying course. Sparrowiiawk ran right away from Colleen Guard, but got unsighted near the escapes, Colleen Guard driving to cover over the few yards that remained. In the second roundl Sunbeam beat Norman. Tuckfield very badly. Sunbeam led .by four lengths, and after 'the turn did practically everything in a fairly lengthy course. Seaplane led Nigger Minstrel by about two lengths, and had possession during the greater part of the work that ensued. Tho course wound up with a'kill, apparently by Nligger Minsrtrel. Quickstep, in a close run up, got the advantage of Queen Card at the last moment. After this it was a give-and-take course, though probably the result was never doubtful with the initial score established by Quickstep. ■ Erin's Isle dbfeated Forward March with) ease. "There were seiroral " gobyes," all of which went to swell the score of Erin's Isle. Dorothy and Night, Attack ran an undecided, and, the same result obtained with Full Hand and Sparrowbawk. In the run off between the latter pair it was practically a straight course to the escapes, a wrench being the only deviation. Li the undecided between Dorojhy and Night Alta-cfc, Dorothy led and turned, Night Attack almost immediately afterwards coming in for a kill. 0 The following is the draw for the Supplementary Stak«® to be run to-day;— Night Attack meet 3 Norman Tuckfield, Croix d'Or meets Grand March, Dash Kaika meets New Chum, Midnight March meets Bright Alice, Queen Card meets Nigger Minstrel, Springfield Lass a bye. In the Grand Challenge, Sunbeam meets Seaplane, Quickstep * meets Erin's Isle, and Dorothy meets Full Hand. In the Sapling Stakes, Gold Field meets Verbena, and Loyalty meets First Home. The first course starts this afternoon at 1.30.
