QUINNAT SALMON FISHING

THE NEW REGULATIONS. The regulations relating to quinnat salmon fishing were gazetted on Friday. They should be generally acceptable- to tho acclimatisation societies interested, as well as to anglers, as they are tho result of modifications obtained by the delegates from the Canterbury and North Otago Acclimatisation Societies at their recent conference with the Minister of Marine, by whose department tho quinnat salmon fishing will bo controlled. For tho present the Waitaki and Rangitata aro declared salmon rivers, and tho angling season for these two livers will end on xlpril 15, or on the Tuesday next after Easter Monday, if it falb on a dato later than April 15 in any year. A salmon license shall only be issued to the holder of a trout license, which must be produced and endorsed. The salmon license for men will be 10s, for women and boys ss, and f or lion residents of New Zealand £1. Free licenses for both trout and salmon may be issued to invalided convalescent soldiers on tho recommendation of tho District Health Officer. In the salmon rivers the season when trout may bo taken begins on the first day of October, and the season when quinnat salmon may be taken begins on January 15 (that is to say, that anyone fishing in the Waitaki or Rangitata rivers on or after that date must hold a salmon as -well as a trout license). Licenses to fish for salmon are to be issued by tho postmasters at Christchurrh, Dunedin, Oamaru, Waimato, Timaru. Temuka, Winchester, and Ashburton. The number of salrton an angler, may take in one day is limited to six, and every licensed salmon angler shall keep a record of the number of salmon caught by him and furnish a monthly return during the fishing season to the Secretary of tho Marine Department. During the salmon angling season —from January 15 to April 15 —salmon caught at sea by hook and lino by fishermen who are owners of a licensed fishing boat may be fold. During the salmon spawning , season - that is, from April 15 to July 31 —no nets cf any icind shall be used at the moutli cf certain risers or streams (specified), or inside the mouth of any river which is ■being stocked with quinnat salmon by the Marine Department. Among tho rivers specified are the Waiau (North Canterbury), Hurunui. Waimakariri, ltakaia, Rangitata.

Kiid Waitaki. The penalties for breaches of these regulations are to be not less than £2, or more than £50. provided that in the case of any person, found guilty of taking salmon or trout Illegally during their spawning season, for of any person who uses dynamite -or other explosive sutietanoe for the purpose of killing salmon or trout, the minimum penalty shall not bo less than £110.
