Sir Douglas Haig reports: We attacked east of Villierct, penetrating the enemy trenches on a several hundred yards' front. We also made raid 3 near Gavrelle and eastward of Vermelles. (Received Sept. 10, at 7.45 p.m.) French communique: Following an intense artillery fire, the Germans-attacked in force on the right bank of the Meuse, on a front of three kilometres on both sides of Hill 344. A few detachments only gained a footing, but our counter-attack completely re-established the lines. The enemy renewed fruitless attempts to recapture positions at Chanme Wood. A number of columns north of Wavrille Wood were cau'ght by our fire and severely punished.
