ENEMY TRENCHES PENETRATED. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association and Reuter. LONDON, September 9. Sir Douglas Haig reports: We attacked east of Villierct, penetrating the enemy trenches on a several hundred yards' front. We also made raid 3 near Gavrelle and eastward of Vermelles. FRENCH GAINS COUNTERATTACKED. HEAVY ENEMY LOSSES. LONDON, September 9. \ French communique: The Germans violently counter-attacked the positions wo captured yesterday in the sector of Fosses and Caurieres Woods. We repulsed them with heavy losses. Our scouts pushed beyond Fosses Wood. It is estimated that there are over 1000 enemy corpses lying before our lines. There is great reciprocal artillery fire on the left (west) bank of the Meuse, btrt no infantry actions have occurred.

FOUR AMERICANS KILLED.

There was fierce all-day-long fighting on the east bank of the Meuse. The enemy generally was driven back, but retained a small part of Chaulme Wood and the ridge eastward of the wood.

Reuter. LONDON, September 10. (Received Sept. 10, at 7.46 p.m.) Sir Douglas Haig reports: The Northumberland troops captured 600 yards of trenches south-easrt of HaroincouTt. Simultaneously we captured a small portion of a trench rounding off our line eastward of Malakoff Farm and improved our position north-east of St. Julien.

LONDON, September 10. (Received Sept. 10, at 7.45 p.m.) French communique: Following an intense artillery fire, the Germans-attacked in force on the right bank of the Meuse, on a front of three kilometres on both sides of Hill 344. A few detachments only gained a footing, but our counter-attack completely re-established the lines. The enemy renewed fruitless attempts to recapture positions at Chanme Wood. A number of columns north of Wavrille Wood were cau'ght by our fire and severely punished.
