MINING.

Daring the past week work has been in progress in No. 2 level of the Waitangi Consolidated mine, driving on tho main reef. A further 7ft of the reef was broken down for a. width of sft. The ore broken out looks well.

The small leader in the Waiotahi mine driven on from the surface level has shown good dabs of gold. A few pounds of picked stone were secured during the week.

In the drive north of the crosscut in the Sylvia Reefs, the reef has come together again through the "horse" of mullock, and is wider than the drive, and fairly ■well mineralised. In the south end the reef shows a little free gold. The gold yield of New South Wales for Jpne was 61830z crude, equal to 57700z fine, valued at £24,507, as compared with 45310z crude, equal to 43000z fine, valued at £18,263 for the same month in 1916. The yield for the first six months of this year amounted to 42,0730z crude, equal to, 39,8680z fine, valued at £169,344, compared with 61,9900z crude, equal to 48,4690z fine, valued at £203,883, for the same period hi 1916, showing a decrease of 86020z fine and £36,539 in value.

There was a notable increase in the production of coal, silver, copper, and tin from Transvaal mine 3 during March, as compared with February, though, with the exception of tin, the January figures were •not reached. The production of each, as i compared with March, 1916, was as follows, last year's figures being given in parentheses:—Coal, sold, 558,722 (495,100) tons; silver, 78,601 (85,133) fine oz; copper ore, 1047 (1293) tons; tin ore, 255 (353) tons. The totals for the first three months ,of this year and last, similarly stated, ■were:—Coal, sold, ,1.544,060 (1.401,594) tons; silver, 236,285 (246,007) fine oz; copper ore, 2965 (3417) ton*; tin ore, 748 (877) tons. The Waihi Gold Mining Company's retarn for the four weeks ended August 26 was £27,101, from 15,626 tons, as compared with £25,937 from 15,592 tons for the same period last year.
