(Pek United Pbess Association.) .AUCKLAND, September 7. Patrick Smith was fined £50 to-day on a charge of assisting in the commission of an offence of betting in an hotel on July 14. Wendels (Limited) were fined £50 on a charge of selling hop beer containing more than 3 per cent, of alcohol. The evidence showed that the Natives at a tangi at Otorohanga were affected by hop beer containing as much as 10 per cent, of proof spirit. WELLINGTON, September 7. The hearing was resumed in the Magistrate's Court of the charges against Fraser, Hodges, Fitzgerald, and M'Williams in connection with a betting transaction. At the c]r>se of the case for tho Crown Fraser pleaded not guilty, and was committed for trial. The information against Hodges was dismissed, and as Fitzgerald and M'WiUiama decided to tender evidence the eases against them were adjourned till Tuesday. BLENHEIM, ■ September 7. Tho amount subscril>ed in Maryborough to the war loan is over £150,000, consisting of £42,717 in the post office, £78.000 in tho banks, and £10,000 with the brokers. The subscriptions would be considerably greater if tin. investments made in the larger centres were added.
