FREE TRAMWAY PASSES
In oonnection with free tramway passes the Finance Committee of the City Council ♦ports as follows: —In terms of reference from the Tramways Committee, the committee has considered the whole question of the issue of free tramway passes, and now begs to recommend that in future passes for other than corporation officials and the City Sinking Fund Commissioners be treated as a grant from the municipal fund to the extent of £10 per pass per annum, which sum the Municipal Department shn.ll pay to tho Tramways Department for each pass that may be hereinafter granted. In order to put tho matter on a proper footing, and afford the council an opportunity of dealing with all tho passes at present on issue prior to the commencement of next financial year, it is further recommended that the present free pass holders be notified that such passe.! are valid to March j. 1918, only, when the position will bo reviewed. The passes now on issue are as follow:—St. John Ambulance Association (2), Society for the Protection of Women and Children,' Royal Society for the Promotion of Health of Women and Children (3), Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. With regard to the application from Mlesdamcs Gordon and Jackson, the committee begs to state that hitherto it has beoa. the practice to grant passes only to philanthropic (societies of an undenominational character, and it is considered that it would be -unwise to depart from this rule in any way. In such circumstances, tha committee is unable to recommend that the application under notice, as also a further application which has been received from, the Patients and Prisoners' Aid Society, be granted. *
