QUARTERLY ATTENDANCE RETURNS. The quarterly attendance returns for tho period ended March 31, compiled by the Otago Ec[ucation Board, show that there were 259. schools in operation in tho district. The average weekly number of pupils on tho rolls during the quarter was 21,860, comprising 11,326 boys and 10,534 girls. Tho average attendances was 10.664 boys and 9897 girls, making, a total of 20,561, or 124 less than for tho previous quarter, and 328 moro than for the March quarter, 1916. Tlio averages for tho city and suburban schools were : —Forbury, 675 ; Caversham, 657; Macandrew Road, 632; North-East Valley, 628; Albany Street, 612; George Street, 598; Normal, 589; Kaikorai, 579Musselburgh, 568; Mornington, 558; High Street, 553; Arthur Street, 522; Kensington, 371; Maori Hill, 358 • Green Island, 338; Moray Place, 310; St. Clair, 286; Anderson Bay, 278; Ravonsbourne, 195; Wakari, 151; Concord, 128; Leith Valley, 57. The averages for the Oamaru schools were: —North School, 469; South School, 355; Middle School, 169. Tlio averages for tho district liigh schools were:—Port Chalmers, 462; Balclutha, 428; Mosgiel, 352; Tokomairiro, 243; Palmerston, 237; Lawrence, 182; Alexandra, 167; Tapanui, 160. Tho schools at Morven Hills and Wflden were closed at December 31 last.
