A Mean Theft.—John Robert Leo was charged that, at Lovell's Flat, ho did steal £1 33, the property of Annie Anderson.—Accused pleaded guilty — Sub-inspector Mathieson said the accused was in tho district for three years as caretaker of the school, and the theft was committed whilo ho was in this position His conduct had been unsatisfactory while in tho_ district. There/were- three convictions against mm for theft. Ho tried to cast suspicion on someono else.—The magistrate characterised this as a mean theft, and sentenced accused to one month's imprisonment in Dunedin Gaol.

On tho 11th December he took out a railway pass. He said that he was under the impression, having taken out the ticket on that date, that it remained current until tho 11th of March. When tho guard pointed it out to him ho paid his faro and took _oat n.n accommodation ticket.—His Worship: Have you paid your fare for tho 14 days?—Tho defendant said ho had not— The Sub-inspector said that the fares for the 14 rlays would be £2 9s.—The defendant said ho would undertake to pay that amount— The Magistrate said thero was nothing to show that the defendants attention was drawn to tho fact that tho ticket did not run for the three months from the 11th of December, and also then? was nothing to show that the guard drow his attention to tho ticket having expired It was the defendant's duty to" n?certa,in the actual dates.
