A WONDERFUL EFFORT.
. SYDNEY, April 17. Captain Bean, cabling on April 16 describes the Au&tralian attack on the Hindenburg line as, a feat that will live in history, as long as history lasts. Under machine-gun tiro and througih such wire fortifications as hitherto have been unknown, the Australians seized two lines of trenches, captured the village of Riencourt ( three mdlea east of CroisiUes) and pushed on 2000 yards beyond the Hindenburg bne. Here their -wonderful effort spent itself Their ranks were thinned to a handful of men unable to keep down the enemy's machme-gun fire and sniping, and the y roinforced > drove them Though the Australians did not succeed, their extraordinary and gallant attack had tr4s r <*«* INFLICT APPALLING SLAUGHTER. PRUSSIAN GUARDS CUT UP. LONDON, 'April 16 The Australian rifle firo at Lagnicourt inflicted most appalling slaughter on the Prussians, -who screamed and sought to escape like rats from a trap until thev dropped. J The Evening Standard states tha<; the Australians suffered in a check experienced it Bfllecourt (east of CroisiUes) on Easter Monday. They broke the Hindenburg line and went on for 2COO vards. The Australians were then caught in a snowstorm, and deprived of aircraft observation and consequently of artillery co-operation, and •were forced to retire. The Australian counter-thrust cut np the Prussian Gnards at Lagnicourt upon their own entanglements. The Australians' killed no fewer than 1500 of them
