Edmund Ryan, soldier, Central Battery. EXAMINATION OF RECRUITS INSTRUCTIONS TO DOCTORS. (Pee United Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, March 14. At a meeting of tho Executive Committee of the Canterbury Patriotic Fund it was decided to bring under the notioe of tho Government the question of alleged faulty medical examination of recruits. Members referred to a number of men who had been sent tc> Trentham and subsequently discharged as medically unfit. Colonel Chaffoy said the doctors now received most strict instructions not to pass any but those absolutely fit.

ANOMALIES OE THE BALLOT

A. C. Stephens, whoso name appears in tho ballot, enlisted in July, and is now a lieutenant attached to, tho Twenty-sixth Reinforcements.

William John Sincock volunteered several weeks ago, and was accepted for the Twenty-eighth Reinforcements. Walter Wilson Strang enlisted with the Seventeenth Reinforcements,, but was discharged as medically unfit after two months' service'. He re-enlisted, and at present is a corporal in tho stores at Trentham.

W. 0. Bundle enlisted with the New Zealand Forces almost 12 months ago, but was rejected on arrival at Trentham He then paid his own expenses to England, and has been attached to the Artists' Rifles for the past six months, transferring to an artillery corps in January. Leslie James Winder enlisted with the Tenth Reinforcements and proceeded to Trentham, where he was rejected on medical grounds. >

W. P. Black, in the employ of Mr Couston, C.E., of this city, enlisted some 12 months ago, but not being willed up he again voluntarily previously to tho ballot being drawn and was under orders to proceed to camp in May.

TAIERI WOMEN'S ASSOCIATION. Tuesday was Red Cross j Day with the Taieri Women's Patriotio Association, and a good attendance of members spent a busy couple of hours in making slippers and underpants for Red Cross purposes. In addition to this work tho following were handed in, made up from material tliat had been previously distributed: —13 shirts, 1 pair socks, 3 balaclavas.

' OVERSEAS CLUB. , A particularly busy day was spent in tho club ixx>m yesterday, workers making up parcels for ttio soldiers in hospital and garments to keep them warm, 'lhe attendance of committee' and working members was particularly good. During the atternoon the Countess of Liverpool visited the room with tho president (Mrs Lindo Ferguson), and was received by Mrs R. Martin (chairwoman). Her Excellency was much pleased with the work done in tlie room, and showed the ladies how the parcels were tied up before being sent to the soldiers in our own hospitals. The committee wishes to point out that the £25 donated to tho Y.M.C.A. is to bo spent on comforts for the soldiers in the trenches. Donations of clothing and material are urgently needed. Donations have been received irom Miss Allan (Belgian goods and soldiers' comforts); Three Boys from High Street School (parcels for Belgians); Miss Little, Kathie and Reba Urquhart, Mrs H. B. Brown, Anon (Belgian goods); Mis Nicol (5s for soldiers' parcels); Mrs J. .H. Walker 1 (£1).

MIDDLEMARCH "WOMEN'S SOCIETY. Tho above society resumed meetings on Saturday. _ There was a good attendance, and, judging by the splendid amount of work that was handed in, workers must have been very busy during the holiday season. Tho Anderson Bay Rod _ Cross met on Tuesday. Some work was given out. More ■workers would be welcomed. Donations were received from tho folio-wing Mrs Dale. Mrs, Nichol, Mrs Dickison, Mrs Meek. District collections amounting to £3 14s were handed in.
