SCHOOL VACATIONS

NORMAL. The presentation of prizes to infants in the lower standards of tho Normal School took place yesterday morning, when the children presented a very interesting selection of songs and recitations. The gathering was presided over by Mr Jamas Wallace (chairman of tho School Advisory Board). The scholars were addressed by Mr Mark Cohen, and tho prizes were distributed by Mr E. G. Watts, a member of the School Board. A feature of the gathering was that the children presented to the Oornwell Fund the amount their prizes had cost. Tho senior classes assembled in tho gymnasium in the afternoon, the building being crowded with parents and friends of tho scholars. Mr Jamea Wallace, who presided, bore testimony to tho late Mr G. C. Israel's great interest in the Union Street School, and said that all that gentleman did was entirely for his love of tho cause of education. The school had lost a number of teachers by sickness and by those who had gone to the front, but all had now returned, and one of their number (Mr G. S. Luke) had been appointed to the staff of the hospital ship Alahcno. Ho was proud to say that their school stood highest in the proficiency examinations in every class, a result that the inspector described as excellent. Tho patriotic work done by the children of Otago was beyond all praise. The staff of tho Normal" School and Training College and the pupils had, during the past two years, raised £403 for patriotic purposes, and the children in Standard VI ot the Normal School had raised £40 by a sale of work. The boys, too, had come, lonvard to help in the cause by learning knitting for the soldiers. Toe prizes in tho various standards and the Navy League prizes were presented byMessrs Brown, Bentley, E. G. Watts (treasurer), Binder (principal of the coilege), and the Rev. Eaton. The head master (My W. M'lilrea) presented the sports prizes, and explained that for the sake of tho health of the scholars sports were held, one hour per week, on tho North Dunedin Reserve for boys, and in the Museum Reserve for girls. Records would be kept of all competitors' work. Mr M'Elrea thanked parents and friends of the school for their assistance and support. Tho children sang and recited in a highly creditable manner. A pleasant incident was the presentation by the girls in Standard VI of a haudsorno bouquet of roses to Vera Hayward in appreciation of her kindness and loyalty to the girls of her class. ALBANY STREET. Tho Albany Street School held its closing demonstrations for tho year yesterday afternoot and evening. In tho afternoon tho junior school had its prize giving and entcrtainmrn',, in the gymnasium, where a large crowd of parents and friends gathered. The programme was in four parts, the infants and Standards I, 11, and 111 each coming in in turn. Messrs J. A. Wilkinson, A. Dempster, H. H. S. White, and W. L Logic each presided and presented prizes and certificates to different classes. Tho children gave a very bright and pretty exhibition of action songs, songs, and recitations, and well earned the hearty applause that was bestowed upon them and their teachers. The junior school band played each of the classes into the room. _ Each child in tho infant department received a book and a packet of lollies. The Burns Hall was crowded in the evening, when the senior school gave its closing demonstration. Selections by the Albany Orchestra prefaced the regailar programme, which was opened by tho senior and junior bands. The bands a'eo contributed later on with excellent effect. Tho Chairman (Mr J. A. Wilkinson) explain*! that the widespread interest shown m the school had mado it necessary to transfer this annual gathorioff from, ths tahoal

gymnasium to tho Burns Hall. Ho spoko of tlio highly creditable results the school had won in examinations during tho past year. In tho courso of tho year tho school hail raised £210 for patriotic; purposes, no less than £120 of which had been brought in by tho band alone. Mr Ronnie (the headmaster) had conferred a great benefit on tho boys and on tho whole school by tho work ho had dotio in organising the band. Referring to the history of the school, Mr Wilkinson said it was opened in 1874, at a time when their distinguished guest, Sir liobcrt Stout, was a member of tho Otago Education Board.

Sir Robert Stout, who was very cordially received, congratulated the boys and girls that in their school there were so many bonny, red-checked girls and strong, healthy, line-looking boys. Any country that had pretty girls and strong boys was saved. lie saw present among the children the grandchildren of pupils whom ho taught 53 years ago in the old Grammar School about the middle of Albany street. He described the conditions prevailing in Dunedin at that, time with u view to showing ihe great advantages possessed by the generation. To those who were not receiving book prizes he pointed out: that they had got the better prize of knowledge and training and the ability to do things. lie asked them to take with them and remember the, maxim of a wise American who said: ''Do what you have to do as well as you can, and bo kind." ]f they would do that they would need no other commandment to carry them through life. He explained to them what wis implied in the fact that they were citizens, and urged them to help and support their teachers. In conclusion he presented the prices and awards won by Standard IV.

The Mayor (Mr J. J. Clark), who presented the Fifth Standard I'rizi s, spoke of the splendid patriotic work done by tho school children during the past two years, and paid a special tribute to Mr llennio and li:s band, .viiieli was the pioneer school band of Dunedin.

The Rev. O. Eaton, who presented the iStandard VI prizes, referred to the high educational standing of Dunedin among the cities of the dominion. It was a good sign that such keen interest was taken in tho public schools of the city as war, shown by that gathering. They wanted not only a high standard of efficiency, but a hig-h moral tone in their schools, and he believed that tho tone of the schools here was high. Mr W. R~ Brugh presented the dux modal to Denzil Simpson, who was loudly cheered. The prize-list included a special prize to Linda West, who has not been absent for half a day during tho past eight years. The programme provided by tho children included a double instrumental quartette by members of the band, part songs by Standards V and VI, and by Standard IV, dancing steps by girls of Standard 11, piccolo solo by Denzil Simpson, and an exhibition of physical drill by scnior_ boys. An impressivo incident was tho reading of the roll of ox-pupils and masters of the school who have given their lives in the war, alter wliieh a bugler snunck'd the "Last Post." When lying in hospital in a critical condition the soldier forwarded £2 to his father to be spent in his father's own benefit, but in the circumstances of his son's death tiie father thought it was most fitt : ng that the money should go half to a medal at the boy's old public school and half to another medal at his old Sunday school.
