THE PINE HILL PURCHASE. The Hod. G. W. Rnssell (Minister oi Ho&pitai-), in reply to a question by a. representative ot the Otago Daily Time 3, made .in interesting statement yesterday on the position of the proposed secondary hospital "at Wakari. The Minister oaid: "Iho question of the Wakari hospital site is under serioos consideration, and an announcement as to the action the Government propoees to Uke will probably be maue in tho contso ot a few daya The position is complicated by two tacte—<l) That tho Hospital Board purchased die land without tho consent of tho Miiuster, as provided by law; and (2) that it paid a price far beyond any valuation which has been obtained in support of the purchase. Under these circumstances I feel that were the illegality to be condoned by me it would bo establishing a most dangerous precedent, and one that might bo used by other boards under similar circumstances. It is this fact which compels the most careful itrvestigation into all matters connected with the pm chase, and the investigations are still being pursued. "I rcjjret that it is necessary to hold up, in the meantime, the establishment of a secondary hospital, but seeing that four years ago I approved of the use of the Pine Hill site for trie establishment of a secondary hpspital,. the responsibility of the delay which has since occurred must be laid entirely on the shoulders of the- board. It must also bo remembered in this connection, that at or about tho time the Hospital Board purchased the Wakari site it submitted a scheme to the Minister for tie sale of the Pine Hill site by private contract, and on terms which practically made a present to the owner from whom the board had originally obtained the lan<i of £370, which had been expended in bringing 'Water on to the site, and others sums expended in improving the ground ready for the establishment of a secondary hospital there. It is needless to say that such proposals wert immediately rejected by the Government which refused to allow the' sale."
