HIGH SCHOOLS' GOVERNORS
The monthly meeting of the Otago High Schools' Board of Governors was held yesterday afternoon; present—Messrs T. K. Sidey, MJ?. (chairman), J. C Stephens, H. Webb, D. T. Fleming, J. M. Gallaway, D. Borne, John Boss, and Dγ Fulton . The Rector of the Boys' High School i&ported that the boys on the school roll totalled 440, including 113 seniors, 297 juniors, and 30 paying pupils. The corresponding totals for March, 1913, 1914, 1915 respectively were 334, 380, and <> The report, was adopted. Miss Allan (principal of the Girls' High School) reported th'at the roll number for the month was 244—75 senior free place ■ pupils and 165 junior pupils, and four paying pupils. The numbers . for the corresponding period last year . were 231 on the r011—69 seniors, 154 juniors, and eight paying pupils. Since last month Miss V. M. Barron _ was offered, and accepted, a Senior' National Scholarship of the New Zealand University. Miss Hastings left on February 28, and Miss Blackie. entered on her duties as commercial mistress on Feb- . ruary 29. Miss B. B. Smith was still acting ■ as relieving mistress. The health of the pupils was very good, very few oases of illness being reported. In cleaning the school the janitor was using disinfectants freely.—The report was adopted. In connection with the application of the Arthur Street School Committee to lease half an acre of the Boys' High Sooohl grounds for a school garden, the chairman reported that, after a visit to the school grounds by Mr Boss and himself and the secretary, * and after conferring with Mr Morrell and Mr Barrett, they recommended that the right to occupy the area applied for be granted to the committee during the pleasure of the board at the nominal rent of Is per annum, the area in question to be fenced by the committee, and a right-of-way thereto to be through the Arthur Street School , grounds only.—Approved. , , The application of the Caledonian Society for permission to hold the schools' championship sports on Saturday week was granted. In reference to the registration of school colours, the Secretary for Education wrote stating- that there was, no power under the Education Act, nor under the Patent Designs and Trademarks Act to make regulations restricting the use of certain colours, or badges to any particular section of the community.—Received. An application was received from the rector to have some forms supplied for use in the new classroom, at a cost, of about £9. —Referred to tho Worts Committee; with power to aot. The Rector forwarded an application from Mr 0. J. Begg, who was granted leave as from May 1 to proceed to the front, to be kept on in his position until Novembsr, as he would not be received in Trentham until hp had held his commission for 12 month?.— Agreed to. A notice was received from tho Treasury of the payment to the board's account of the sum ,of £63. 7e 6d, apportionment of . secondary reserves' rent for quarter ended December 31, 1915. Messrs Duncan and MaoGregor wrote forwarding conditions of. sale of leases in the Oamaru district on April 1, and transfer of lease of sections 13 to 34. block 17. and 12 to 35, block 18, town of Ardon, Mr D. • M'Bratney to Mr David Devon," certifying that tho documents wero in order, and that . the board's seal might be safely, affixed.—. Received. Accounts amounting to £338 0s 6d were passed for payment
