FOOTBALL.
Sib,—May I, on behalf of the executive of the Canterbury Rugby Union, extend, through'your columns, our warm thanks for and appreciation of the action of the Otago Hug by Union in sending a representative team to Christcliurch last Saturday to play in aid of the funds of our ground, Lancaster Park, which, owing solely to the war, is in extreme financial difficulties?
Whilst we quite recognise that sport of any kind should' be of Tory, minor consideration in. these critical' times, yet it would, be worse than folly to. allow our various playing areas "to go under," into the hiarids of the mortgagees, especially when we remember that the sport has helped in the physical training of hundreds of footballers who arc now playing a greater game at the Dardanelles Our strongest Canterbury team, with the exception of* Gray, will visit Dunedin on Saturday next to play Otago solely in aid of the funds of the Corjsbrook Ground, when I feel-sure the public will show its sympathy with the .object of the visit by attending in large numbers. May 1, in conclusion, thank- Cr H. H. 8. White (manager of the 'Otago team) for his liberal contribution to the Lancaster Park Fund—a donation .all the more appreciated as' it- was quite unsolicited?—-I am, etc., F. T. Evans,. ( President Canterbury Rugby Union. Christehurch, September 1.
