WOMEN AND THE EDUCATION BOARD.

Sib, —A woman is needed on the Otago Education Board. Why? Because women are Very .much interested, in all that concerns women and children, and the education of our girls, and. the, status of our women teachers is a matter of very grave moment to us. More man, not understanding the complexities of woman, is incapable of guiding the feminine " Dreadnought ' into the deepest and best channels to ensure its ultimate arrival at the ' ocean of lifa where it will be eventually needed to safeguard the small craft of childhood as they sail into the harbour of good citizenship. Twenty-one years ago, when women appealed for the franchise.,, we were ,'told that womankind would be demoralised by attendance at the polling, booths. Instead, however, of woman being- lowered by the tone of the booths, she has raised the conditions. Adam was created • first, but it was not long before Eve was created as a helpmeet, and, though she made mistakes, Bhe did not altogether m''ss her mark. Just think what men would have missed 1 , everf during recent year?, if there had been no Eve'to hold up before the eyes of the new woman as an example of weakness and evil. Some men in the present day are weak and evil, some are brave and good, bat none are infallible, and good women are as much needed in the conduct of the nation s affairs as are good men. Women are needed ill practically everv sphere of usefulness in New Zealand. The fact that women are capable of holding their own is_ being recognised, as evidenced in the kindly, oon,. sisfent courtesy with which they are treated wherever they have gained a footing, and also bv the various avenues of public usefulness that are being opened to them. True, it is that in one or two instances members of committees or boards have offered as a reason whv women should not be in those places, that thev oannot toll the stories they used to tell and they cannot smoke. I would answer that life is real life, is earnest—wreaths of smoke are not its goal. The women of Otago want representation on the Otago Education Board. We are nominating a lady who, we believe, has the necessary qualifications for the position, ana we ask you to hein /us in the matter, as you have alwavs helped right and justice. do not ask for votes actuated by motives of-chivalry merely, but because wo think that by the election of a woman .as one of its members the Otago Education Board will be rendered more effective in its working than it is now, even in the present high state of efficiency.—T am, etc., E. Pinfold.
