Sir Clement Kinloch Cooke has written a shilling "Life of Queen Mary" for Messrs Nelson. , In the new novel, r " Marjorie," upon which lie is now at work, Mr H. G. Wells is said to be turning his attention to the problem of household economy. The "Oxford'' issue of Scott's novels now includes "Guy Mannering," with introduction, notes, and glossary by A. D. Innes, and with numerous illustrations. To their " Centenary Edition" of Dickens, Messrs Chapman and Ilall have added " Bleak House," in two volumes, as well as a volume containing " The Mystery of Edwin Drooel" and "Master Humphrey's Clock.'' Thackeray's unpublished manuscript, "Cockney Travels," which Lady Ritchie has discovered, appears in the June number of Harper's Magazine both in England arid America. By special arrangement it will also appear in the Cornhill a month later. Mr A. C. Benson's "From a College Window " is out in a seventeenth impression from Messrs Smith, Elder, and Co." Mr Benson's very numerous admirers will be glad to have this characteristic volume in so agreeable a form. The latest addition to Mesfers Greening's Lotus Library is "The Diamond Necklace, 1 ' by Frantz Funck-Erentano. Mr 'Anthony Hope's new novel, "Mr* Maxon Protests," which has just reached Dunedin, is described as the author's comment and criticism on modern life and its conflicting codes of honour and morals. Mis Wilfrid Ward's new novel, "The Job Secretary," will be published immediately by Messrs Longmans. Messrs Witimvby" and Co. have in tho press, and will shortly publish, an illustrated -travel .book enisled "Through South West-land," by Miss A. M. Moreland. It is a (.harming chronicle of a ride through a district in New Zealand which is still unknown to the outside world—a district full of tho charm of forest, of beautiful mountains and lakes, and of swift rivers which issue from glaciers that push their noses even among the tree-ferns of a sub-trcpical growth. The settlers in their isohtod homes appear and disappear as the journey passes onwards. Sis. volumes have appeared in Macmillan's centenary edition of the works of Thackeray—namely, "Vanity Fair," "The History of Pendcnnis."
