MUSIC FESTIVAL.
THE SHEFFIELD CHOIR. WELLINGTON SEASON ENDED. (Pee United I'hfss Association.) WELLINGTON, July 2. After the matinee yesterday the Sheffield Choir were the guests of the Governor and Lady Islington at Government House. In the evening there was an Immense crowd at the Town Hall to hear the oratorio " Elijah;" indeed, hundreds were turned away. The Sheffield Choir was reinforced by 250 local 6ingere. The majestic oratorio was, of course, sung as it had never barn sung here beiore. The choir concluded its Wellington'season last night, and left siiWquentlv for Christchurch. The Town Hall was filled in the after noon, when the choir gave a Coronation Kmmre concert, Dr Harriss and Dr Coward conducting; alternately. The audience was enthusiastic, and many items were encuwl. The singing of " The Bolls of St Michaels" was a perfect revelation of what is possible in choir music, arousing the audience to a high pitch of enthusiasm. Lord and Lady Islington and party attended both in the afternoon and evening. The takings during the season, consisting of three evening performances and one matinee, amounted to about £3200.
ARRiyAL IN CHRISTCHURCH. I (Feu United Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, July 2. I The members of the Sheffield Choir arj rived to-day from Wellington, and were met by a fairly large crowd at Lyttelton, i and by a very large crowd on the Christchurch Railway Station. The host and hostesses of several members of the choir chiefly comprised those who were present. This afternoon, with the local choir, the Sheffield Choir had a rehearsal of " Elijah."
