MURDER OF ETHEL HARRIS

This Executive Council decided that Smart (the murderer of Ethel Harris) shall be hanged on Tuesday next.
Whon asked, after his conviction, if ho had anything to say boforo the sentence o[ tho court was passed, Smart said, "I wish to eay tlhait I am an, innocent man. That is all I havo to say." Mr Justice M'llillan, in passing seutonoe, said tihat, notwithstanding prisoner's declaration of innooence, thcro could be nn doubt about hio guilt. He had been found guilty of a crime which tho evidence showed was conceived with deadly deliberation and executed with unflinching brutality. The callous indifference with which ho had taken another woman , into the house after the crime showed that the prisoner had made up his mind that nothing should stand in the way of the gratification of his desires, regardless of either the law of God or man. for such a crime there was r.o hope for meroy in this world. .
Sentence of death was pronounced, a;:d Smo,rt -was romovod in a trembling condition. \
