BRUCE COUNTY COUNCIL.

Tho monthly meeting of tho Bruce County Council, held on Tuesday, was attended by Crs 11. M. Driver (chairman), J. M. Begg, J. Smith, Jasper Chirk, W. Bell, D. .lardvne, P. Haggart, D. Boyd, T. 11. ltusspll, and T. Scott. . CORHESPONDBNCE. Tho Inspector reported that the nightsoil was being deposited in tho paddock used by the council for that purposo in a very unsatisfactory manner. Ho stated that at the time of. his visit two horses and two sheep wero grazing in tho paddock. Dr Chumptaloup also wrote in connection with this matter, and stated that all niglitsoil must be sufficiently covered immediately it was deposited at tho depot.—Tho ohairinan and Cr Russell to wait on the Mayor of Milton for the purpose of making somo arrangement to abate the nuisance. W. R. Brugh asked jiermission to add a small lean-to to the council's shed at Taieri Mouth as a' housing for a boat.—The matter was held over for a report from the mem-ber-for tho riding. L. H. Spooner rcuested permission to erect a boatshed on the foreshore at Waihola.—Permission granted. The Hon. T. Mackenzie enclosed a letter from the. Hon. J. A. Millar, Minister of Railways, in connection with the request that th© siding at Titri should be extended ■tojlio river. The letter stated that tho Minister considered the cost of extending the siding would lx> altogether out of proportion to tho advantage to hi gained, and after giving the matter every consideration he regretted he could not see his way to authorise any expenditure in the direction indicated. Mr Millar stated that tho cost of a siding to the river bank, including tho cost _of tho necessary land, but without making any provision for a wharf, would be about £425. The traffic at Titri was inconsiderable, and if tho council considered that a siding was necessary it should pay the cost thereof.—Received.

The liruce Coal Company applied for permission to put in a 4Jin water pipe under the roadway near the company's weighbridge—Granted, subject to the approval Of tho engineer. exgixef.r's hwort. The County Engineer reported as follows;—" The work on the protection of river bank, Incbelutha, with willow facines on sections 1 and 2. block I, has made good progress, and will soon bo completed. On the Stirling-Bcnha.'.- road one of the contracts is Hearing completion. On the other two contracts little progress has been made. Nothing has been clone to tho contract on the Upper Barnogo road. On the Hillcnd to Waitahuna bridge road good progress has been made, and the work will bo finished in a few days. the Greenfield to Punt road nothing has been done since my last report. On the road, Waitahuna West, at D. Eraser's, n start lias boon made to tho metalling. Tho crntract on the Mount Stuart-Blackburn road is still unfinished, and the metalling contract on HillendI'Mount Stuart road is also unfinished. A start has been made to the fencing of the. new road from Manuka Creek to Mount Stuart, and tho formation at. lower end of the above road has been carried out, also some of the sharp angles on the road have been reduced. Tho worb on the Black bridge are progressing favourably. One of the piers has becn„crocted, and tho second one is now above water level. Those are the two main piers, the others being on dry ground. A start has been mado to the formation and metalling contract on Louden's Gully road, but tho formation is not being carried out in a satisfactory manner and according to tho plan. Two new culverts have been put down on the road past Reid's and Salmond's. An agreement has been made with Mr S. Shaw to clear the scrub and manuka off tho road across the creek (known as Graham's Creek) for the mm of £5. Your committee met at Kaitiingata and accepted the tender of Mr Thomas Ilislop for the contract of formation and gra.'oiling at. the cemetery, Kaitangata, for the sum of £40 9s 6d. " A culvert on the road to Mrs Moir'e, North Balchitha, has been lengthened, and the formation made up to the original level. A footpath has been foi mod on the side of the street leading to I3ain awl Thow's, North Balclutha.. Repairs have been maelo ito the Matau bridge at Stirling through some of the timbers giving way. Tenders have been called for several of the works under Government votes to be dealt with at this meeting."—The report was adopted. TEXDEHS."

The following tenders wero considered: liaising portions of Craijjie's road—A. M'Culloch, £52. This was tho only tender reeoive'd. The- engineer's estimate for this work was £28, and it was decided to call for fresh tenders for the work, Metalling portions of QlaTondon-IJonvick mad at Jog-roc's aaul Young's. A. 'Annicliich's tender 'of £112 15s was accepted. Only one other tender was _ received. Clearing out portion of Graham's Creek: As no tenders were received for this contract, it was decided to carry out the work under day labour, the job not to cost more than £22, the engineer's estimate. Metalling portion of road near the creamery, Blackburn: A. Bain's tender of £79 7s 6d was •lopopted Only one other lender was received. Metalling portions of Riverside road at Moore's and Ouickshank's: No tenders were received for this work, aad it was decided to call -for fresh tenders. GENERAL. On the motion of Cr Smith, it was decided "to- advertise that all rates unpaid by April 10 be eued for without further notice. .

It was decided that the old timber taken from the Black Bridge be auctioned.

The engineer was instructed to have ilio work extended at tho Hillcnd-Waitahuna Bridge road. It was decided to expend tlio sum of £100 on tho Tabic Hill road, the engineer to lay off work ar.d call [or tendors for next meeting. It was decided to instruct E. Grigor to prepare a plan of the road to be closed at Johnson's, Wangaloa.

Accounts amounting to £2334 18s 2d wane passed for payment. The receipts for the month totalled £994 Bs.
