• FIXTURES. February 15.—Invorcargill Regatta. < February 25.—Ravensbourn© Regatta. February 25—Wanganui Regatta (Cham- > pionship). ' March 23.-Otago Regatta. April 15.—Queenstown Regatta.
At a meeting of the Otago Rowing Association last week it wa6 decided to hold the annual regatta at Port Chalmers on Annivorsary Day. It was also decided that a youths' pair-oar race be added to tho' programme. This will make a total of 12' races on the programme, including a representative race. The Senior Fours will to raced in best-and-best boats,' but the Senior' Pairs and Double Sculls will still be rowed in clinker boats. TEo association considers, and "wisely too, that it is dangerous for coxswainlc&s boats to be rowed at Port Chalmers owing to the number of motor and sailing craft whioh are always on the water, and l to the strong tide which usually prevails. Tho -winner of the Senior Fottra, if the olub. is associated to the 0.R.A., will .hold tho Henley Cup, for tho year. By rowing the Senior Pairs and' Doublo Sculls in cuhker boats thecommittoo is likelv to secu/e more- entries than if these races had been rowed in best boats. Messrs W. J. Wilson, M. H. Priest, and M. Solomon, the association's selectors, havo chosen Messrs J. F. M'Grath, J. R. Kerr, H. Paton, and A. Black, the Otago Club's Senior Four, to represent Otago against Southland in the annual contest for the Edmond Shield on March .23. The crew is a good one, and' one that will take some beating in clinker boats. .
Tho Port •Chalmers Club is likely to be tho only local club to be represented at tho Invercatgill regatta on Wednesday, 15th inst. Crews are entered for Maiden' and Junior Double Sculls and Youths'' Fours. For these races the men have been doing some good practice, and willno doubt givo a good exhibition down south. ' . ' .
Stevens, of last year's Otago Senior Four, is again in town, and rowing for his club. Owing to his movements being uncertain, however, he is not taking his usual seat in the Senior Four.
The Queen's Drive Club , will' shortly select crews' for the President Pairs. Matters are still auiot at Port', the only hard practico indulged in being by the Port crews training for Invercargill regatta. The annual meeting of the Queenstown Regatta Club was held on' January 26, when it was decided to hold the regatta : on Easter Saturday, April 15. Nearly all the old office-bearers and committee were re-electel, and much enthusiasm was shown generally.
If Arnst and Pearce are matched' to row for .the worktfs championship, the course' will be on the Parramalta River, ar.d tho date will be either late in April or early in May.
In reviewing tho past rowing season, the London Sportsman, had, among other things, the following reference to tho Arnst-Barry rao3:—"The prevailing wind at tho timo of the year the .race was decided, is easterly, and, as tho course runs from west to east, it was a dead ; ncser' throughout. The water, too, was abnormally low, and it was dull heavy rowing, all in favour of the stronger and more powerful man. Arnst was fit to tho day. He sculls with an awkward screw and a wriggling over-reach and slices his right scull badly; but brute force gets him there all tho same, and he made very few faults in the popply water when it came to racing."
