KARITANE HOME FUND.

MISS BEATRICE DAY'S APPEAL. At, tho conclusion of the play l; .Peto" in the Municipal Theatre, Invcrcargill, oil Friday evening, Miss Beatrice Day, leading lady of the Clarke and Meynell Company, made a public appeal to tbo audience on behalf of the Karitanc Home. Addressing herself particularly to mothers Miss Day said

I am going to ask you all to help to keep Hp tho list of shillings for the Karitane Home for Babies. Lovinj mothers need a little knowledge and a little experience, both of which they can have for tho asking at tho home; for tho scheme is not. only to bring up tho babies themselves but to help the mothers to bring them up, and a little see-for-vourself kind of knowledge is worth all the books that were ever written. The natural instincts of motherhood givo women some knowledge, tho simple process of the Karitanc Home system aJfords another kind which is more likely to bring increased happiness to tlio mother's department, and more healthy and happy children to this Dominion. I am speaking- as cme who knows a little us wife and mother—u very anxious ono for many weeks whilst searching' for tho right food. That was before humanised milk was known. The Karitano Home system is going to build up an empire of st rong .men and women, to which I trost all the mothers in tho Dominion are going to help and bo rewarded by the lovo aiul gratitude of a strong race. I take it that one gcod eauso help.s another, and whilst the I'lunkot nurso is doing good work in nursing she will bring tho mothors in touch with .the Karitano Homo. Your first need is to help the mothers that they may better manage tbo children. I am a wandering vagabond, but wherever I go the children's wants are ever bofore me, and I desire to bo of more sarvioe. I appeal to you ail to keep the shilling fund- going. I shall bo leaving yc-ur happy Dominion, but though only a rolling stone I shall, I hope, go on gathering the "pieces" for tho Karitano Home.

• Miss Day's remarks (says tho Southland Times) were frequently interrupted by applause, and the outburst at t:hc conclusion of her appeal appeared to indicate the full sympathy of tho audience. The curtain fell and rof» again on Miss Dav proudly smiling over the particularly nice baby which had .made so effective an appearance in tho play of the evening—a pretty situation, the cffcct of which in speeding tho appeal to tho hearts of tho departing company will 110 doubt be seen in the shilling fund contributions.
