FIRES.

(Per Ukited Pnr.ss Association.) STBATFOKD, May 19. At an early hour this mon'iiug the New Plymouth sash and door sawmill at Toko was destroyed by lire. Everything except the stacked timber was destroyed. The insurance is not known. MASTK'RTOX, May 19. A fire broke out at 1 a.m. in »■ fruitshop ;ind billiard ealoon occupied by a Japanese named Ah I.op. These wore part of a two-sturey block of buildings close to the Post Oltiee. It was raining heavily at- the time. The lire spread' along the upper stories, and practically destroyed tho buildings. The other shops were occupied by .Mis Home (refreshment saloon). JJlinkhorn (tobacconist), Clarke (lish shop), and Cole and Wpslerman (drapers). A large part of the latter's stock was removed, but was much damaged. Mr and Mrs Home and their two children slept on the premises and liadl a narrow escape. The insurances amount to £3000. Immediately after this fire Ruttlement's brewery, ,an old, unoccupied liuildinj. was burned down. It was insured far £100. MARTON. May 19. A (ire at Marton last night destroyed the offices of Harris and Ladley (toiicitors) and Harris and Son (landi" agents), also the Salvation Army Barracks. \\ K. Gibbuns's cordial factory, and the large stables owned by lb-ice. Broad, ami Co. Tho lire started' in Messrs Harris and Lad ley's otiice, and aided by a strong wind quickly spread to the adjoining premises. The brigade did splendiu work" and succeeded in saving many buildings. Insurances: Oibbons's cordial factory, £350 mi the building and stock in the Alliance, £100 on the machinery in the Liverpool and London and Globe'; Harris and Ladley had £75 on the contents in the ltoyal; Harris and Son, £50 on ajob printing plant and effects in the Norwich Union, and £150 on the buildin« in the United; Bike, Broad, and Co'!s stables, valued at £300. were insured for £75 in (he Commercial Union. There was no insurance on the large stock of manures and farm produce.
