GISBORNK, April 10. Mr Arthur Devery, an old settler, die<l as the result of a fiill from a horse. J lis wife (lied a few weeks ago. NKLSON, April 10. Arthur Aeklam Daly, a. tailor, committed suicide, this morning In- .shooting himself. The deceased in January last escaped from drowning in the harbour, when George Gunderson lost, his life. That preyed on Daly's mind, and during the pas* fori night he had been very depressed. When he was missed about 6.10 this morning, search was made, and the body was discovered in a disused brewery. He leaves a widow and live children. At the inquest ft verdict of suieido whilst temporarily insane was returned. (Prom Oue Own Correspondent.) TAPAXUI, April 11. Mr Charles Howells, auctioneer for Messrs Wright, Stephenson, and Co, in Invcicargill, met with a fatal accident on Kdie's hill this morning. He was driving from Moa Flat to Tapanui, and the brake would not act while the vehicle was descending the hill. Mr howells, it is supposed, jumped out, and was killed on the spot. The other occupants of the buggy—Messrs M'Kenzie (farm manager for Mr howells at Moa. Flat) and Philpott (of Woodlands)—reached the foot of the hill safely. An inquest will be held tomorrow.

A drag party, including about 22 persons, the bulk of whom were women and children, while driving between Mosgiel and Outram on Good Friday, met with an accident, which fortunately did not have fatal consequences. At an awkward piece of thp road the horses took fright at a passing motor, and, swerving, suddenly capsized the drag over an embankment. The occupants were thrown clear of the vehicle, and although a number of the party sustained some cuts and bruiees the greater number escaped injury. Mrs Sheriff, a resident of Riifscll street, sustained an injury to her collar-bone, a dislocation of the elbow and shoulder, some cuts on the face, and some bruises, while two of her sisters were also bruised and shaken. The ambulance proceeded from town to the locality, and conveyed Mrs Sheriff to her home, where she was medically attended, and is progressing favourably.

On Saturday morning a man named William Harkin. aged 30 years, a recent arrival from .Auckland, either jell or precipitated himself over the face of Logan's Point quarry, sustaining injuries which resulted fatally shortly alter his admission to the Hospital. The. attention of a young man working at a. hoalshcd near the quarry was attracted to the locality l>y hearing a cull or cry, and on looking up ho observed deceased's body tumbling clown the perpendicular rocky' face. The young man, with a companion, immediately hurried to the scene, where they discovered Harkin, a tall, well-dressed'man, lying at iho bottom in an unconscious condition, and suffering from serious injuries to his head. It is stated -that deceased, who was living with his wife's parents in Dmicdin, recently threatened to commit suicide. An inquest will he held at the Hospital at 10 a.m. to-day. Deceased was a staircase builder, and was employed by the Ferro-Coucrelc Company.
