PROSECUTION AT GORE. (Pkk United I'ukss Association.) GORE, February 4. The first of 16 charges against live persons, consequent upon th(f~ecent liquor raids, was heard to-day, when Mary .lane Thurston was fined £40 for selling, this being her first ol'lcnce. A second, charge was withdrawn, hi giving judgment, Mr Kenriek, K.M., referred to the objections frequently urged against the methnd.s adopted by the police to secure convictions. Personally, he did not like, them, but he realised that they were necessary in order to bring offenders to book. Otherwise the law would he a dead letter. The police should, however, not endeavour to make purchases of persons merely for the sake of testing. Reasonable grounds for suspecting illicit trading should exist for kiking such a slcp.
