CITY POLICE COURT.

Wednesday, May 13. (Before Mr C. C. Graham, S.JI.) Alleged False Pretences.—Warwick William, Wood, for whom Air B. S. Irwin appeared, was brought up on a charge that ne.M at Auckland, obtain from one "illiani Young two suits of clothes, value £10 103, by means of a false pretence.— Rub-ins|>ector Norwood asked for a rc- > . maud to Auckland on the 21st inst., and mentioned that the goods had' been ol> tamed on the representation that accused was employed on tho Government survey staff.—Mr Irwin asked that bail be fixed, as.he understood that there was a probability of tho matter being settled. This 1 course would allow of communication witli Auckland with a view to a settlement.— Accused was. remanded to appear at Auckland on tho 21«t inst., bail being fixed at accused in £50, and one surety in a like amount, or two sureties oE £25 each. Embezzlement. — William Serimgeour Davidson, a book canvasser, pleaded Guilty to a 1 charge of defrauding? Messrs., Johnston land Son, booksellers, of the sum of ss, ami also pleaded "Quilty" to the theft of 2s 6d,"the money of the firm. Accused said ho retained tho moneys on account of commission due.— Tho police statement went to show that accused on a former occasion had been discharged from the firm's employ for a siniila,i but had been taken on atr;iip on promising reformation.—A previous conviction for vagrancy was on record against accused, and he was sentenced to three months' imprisonment.
