CORNISH BEFORE THE COURT. REMAND TO BAI/CL(:THA GRANTED. SUBSTANTIAL BAIL FIXED. \ Richard Cornish, licensco of the Stirling Hotel, appeared before Mr C. C. Graham, S.M,. at the City Police Court yesterday to answer a charge that "lie did, on May 1, 1903, unlawfully kill ami slay one Catherine Elizabeth Cornish, his wife." Accused, a tall,'strongly-built man, with firm-set features, stepped into the dock without hesitation, and betrayed no outward sign that he was all'ected by the seriousness' of the charge brought against -him. • Aftor the clinrgc had been read over by the clerk of the court, , Mr A. O. Hanlon said: I appear for the accused, your Worship. Mr P. S. K. Macassey: I appear for the Crown, your Worship, and apply for a remand to Balclutha on the 20th inst. Mr Ilanion: I have no objection to offer to a remand to Balclutha. I ask your Worship to fix bail. > Mr Macas-sey: Ido not oppose the application for bail, but I submit, in view of . the nature of the charge, that it should ■ be substantial. Mi- Hanlon: In fixing bail, I aslc your Worship to consider that accused's personal bond is of substantial value. lie is a man of pro]>ei-ty, and any sum he may be held responsible for would bo recoverable. I would suggest that accuscd bo bound over to, appear in a substantial stun, two sureties in a moderate amount each. Immediately after the court rose the bail was forthcoming, the bondsmen being William Cuttle (dealer) and George Haydon (licensed victualler).
