TYPHOID IN AUCKLAND

THE CAUSE VISIBLE

(From Our Own Correspondent.) AUCKLAND, May 9. In connection with the recent outbreak of typhoid at llichmond, in the vL-inity of Cox's' Creek, a visit of inspection has been paid to the locality by the .Mayor of Grey J.j no (Mr George' ftiuus), accompanied by the district health officer (Dr Ptirdy), Messrs A. Donald, and W. .1. Iloldsworlii (members of the council), and the town clerk and sanitary inspector. It was found that the outfall of the city sewer at the back of tho Marist Broihers' College is m a bad date of repair, anil that the open sewer leading from the outfall lo Cox's Creek also needs attention, owing to an acemliuliitioii _of vegetable growth and general debris. The city engineer has already put on o- number of men to clean out this sewer. The other city sewer, running up from the Bayfield side of Cox's Creek, is also receiving the attention of the city authorities. The premises al which various industries are carried on, and which were referred to at the last meeting; of the Borough Council, were also inspected, and were found to he in a satisfactory condition. The Queen street extension and the sawdust lip were likewise examined, and Dr Purdy expressed the opinion that no insanitary conditions existed ii> .connection therewith. Mr Savers slates that he is strongly of opinion that the Borough Council, in conjunction with the City Council, should at once carry out temporary improvements to the existing sewer emptying into Cox's Creek. He considers) that a 12in pipe should be laid at Iho mouth of each ol Ihe two city sewers, and that these should bo carried down to meet the outfall of the Grey Lynn sower, whence a larger pipe should bo laid to carry the scwago beyond the bridge at the sawmill. He will submit a report embodying this suggestion to a meeting of the Borough Council on Monday evening. Ho will also suggest that the council obtain a bacteriological examination of the milk supply of the borough.
