Miss Ralstrodo, the principal, conducted the party through the buildup, .«„d addressing tho girls the Hon. Mr l'owkls said ho had just been for a trip round the East Coast, where he supposed many of the fathers and mothers of tho pupils were. He was greatly interested m the work done in the East Coast schools, which ho had no doubt many of tlio pupils had been through. They were now receiving (he benefit of higher education, and he hoped tliev would mako the fullest, possible use of it, so that they niisrht carry its advantages back to their own people. In this school they were taught the benefits of clean habits. Cleanliness was next to godliness, and one of the first essentials of civilisation was cleanliness—clean houses, clean bodies, and cleanminds. They wanted the ppoplo of New Zealand to become one people, and this could only be done by Maori girls am* lx>ys adopting tlio best things in European customs, habits, and life.
