OPPOSITION TO UNIFCAITON.

(Received May li, at 9.51 p.m.) Vehement opposition to unification as a form of closer union in South Africa has arisen in Natal, where tho Pretoria- Conference is accused of din-mekssly attempting to rush the question through. The Natal Mercury declares that Natal is able to stand alone, and that she refuses to be coerced.
A NATIONAL CONVENTION. PRETORIA, May 11. (Received May 12, at 0.5 a.m. The Pretoria Conference has arranged ;i national convention to deal with, the question of union. The convention consists of 12 delegates from Capo Colony, eight from the Transvaal, and five each from Natal and the Orange River Colony. LONDON, May 11. (Received May 12, at 0.5 a.m.) The Times' Johannesburg correspondent says that the conference desires to concentrate all the power deciding the course of events after the convention in the hands of the Government and not in those of the Parliaments. A draft of the civil service law has been issued at Pretoria, It empowers the Government to request any official to qualify in Dutch or English within .12 months.
