GRAVES OF THE FALLEN.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, August 18. The discreditable state of many of the cemeteries wherein reposo the remains of deceased soldiers who fought in the Maori wars was referred to by Mr Herries on Friday night. Ho instanced certain graves in the-Tauranga district, and also on the Napier-Taupo road, which, he said, wore overgrown with weeds and scrub. Ho did not think that this was creditable to the colony.
Mr Massey,' in endorsing the complaint, referred to the Rangiriri graveyard -and others, where somo of the monuments were of wood, and were rapidly decaying. Ho thought tlio names of the men who fought, and died in defence of the colony should be preserved for future generations. He also spoke of the scene of the battle of Otakau, at which the historio declaration of defiance was mado by a Maori warrior, said to he Rewi, who, when challenged to surrender, declared he would fight on ake ako ako ("for ever and ever and ever"). Mr Massey said a. road- had been taken through the centre of the pa, and there was :fittlo of tho'. original left; but he thought something should he done to mark a spot which in years to come would be of great historio interest.
