Captain Hicks, late of the barque Lutterworth, has gone to Auckland to take command of tho barque Don, which recently put info Auckland whilst bound from Adelaide to Falmouth. Captain Allsopp is apparently too ill to continue tho voyage in command of tho Don.

A proposal ia under consideration to construct a two-port waterway from Georgian Day to Montreal, via the Ottawa Itivcr. The waterway, which will enable ocean-going vessels to go to Chicago, will bo 430 miles long, and will cost nboiit 125,000,000 dollars. Tho Zcalandia arrived at Duncdin at 8.10 a.m. yesterday from Sydney, via Auckland and East Coast ports, having experienced light variable winds and smooth seas, with fine weather generally along the coast. The Xcalandiu sails at 1 p.m. to-morrow for Sydney, via Auckland and the usual East Coast ports. The vessel is commanded by Captain Dnnsford, of tho Wcstralia, this trip.

The Monowai arrived at. 10.35 a.m. yesterday from Sydney, via Cook Strait. She left Sydney at 630 n.m. on August 10, and the next day she experienced strong W.S.W. winds wilh following seas, which moderated towards evening. The following day the wind shifted to the eastward, and continued strong, brisk winds and heavy seas being encountered until Tuesday night, when the weather moderated to fresh southerly winds to arrival at Wellington, thenco fine along the coast. Tho Monowai proceeds to Port Chalmers this morning, and sails in the afternoon for Molbourno, via Bluff.

The steamer Alabama, which recently completed a charter for the Pncific Plk>3phates Company, has changed hands. She ha? been purchased by Messrs James Paterson and Co., of Melbourne, to replace tho wrecked steamer Kasby in the inlor-Stalc trade. The Alabama is an iron screw stenmor of 1940 tons gross and 1241 tons net. She was built bv Messrs A. Leslie and Co-., of Newcastlo-on-Tyno. in 1879, hor dimensions being: Length. 285 ft; beam, 35ft 2in; and depth, 22ft bin." Her engines, of tho compound typo, are by Messrs R. and W. Hawthorn.
