TARIFF ALTERATIONS

(MEETING OP THE CYCLING TRADE.

A meeting of cyclo traders was hold in tlio Excelsior Hotel last oveuing, and .was prosided over by Mr W. Milncr. The Chairman explained that lie had convened the meeting to discuss the tariff question. Ho saw, according to tho tariff proposals as sent down, that nothing hod boon done with reference to bicycles, and in travelling round ho had hoard tho opinion froely expressed Hint something should l ho done in that direction. Ho had thought if ho could get the trade together some courso might be deeided upon in tlio direction of carrying resolutions and having tfiem forwarded to the Hon. J. A. Millar.

After some slight, discussion it was resolved. on tho motion of Mr AY. A. Scott, seoonded by Mr K. Howlison, that it bo pointed out to tho Minister of Customs that whereas in schedulo B of tho amended tariff proposals bicycle and bicycle fittings—that was, bracket shells, fork and' stay ends, fork tips, bridges, crown and lugs—wore dutiable when japanned, painted, or varnished, this should bo amended to admit of theso artielos, or parts, coming in frco of duty, as such japanning, painting, or varnishing was only to prevent tho articles from rusting during transit; further, that this japanning, painting, or varnishing was in no wise of uso as an embellishment, and had to be. burned off in tho process of manufacture.

It was also resolved that the Minister bo informed that it was the opinion of tho retail cyolc traders of Duncdin that iu tho interests of the cyclo trade as a whole it was advisable to plaoo a specific duty oil aJI bicycles, frames only, or wheels built up, imported into New Zealand, Tho only dissentient from this was Mr Scott.

On the motion of Mi' W. A. Scott, seconded by Mr R. S. Tonlcineon, it was resolved that tho following bo forwarded to the Minister—" That the cycle traders of Dunedin are of the opinion that nickelplated spokes and nipples, screwed or otherwise, should come in duty free, they being component parts of a wheel tho samo as tho double butted tube was of a frame, which would have tho cft'cct of causing the wheels of imported machines to bo built in tho colony," A vote of thanks to the chair closed tho meeting.
