WAIPARA-BLENHEIM RAILWAY.
ANOTHER SECTIO^PKNED. (Per United Press Association.) n>i rr CHEVIOT, March 21. the Hon. W. ITall-.Toncs to-day. opened the Domett section ; of the Waipara-Blen-lieim railway. This brings the lino to within three miles of the centre of tho Cheviot settlement, and there arc now 17 miles of railway on the estate. In the courso of a. speech after the function, the -Minister defended the endowment clauses of tho Land Bill against the criticisms of Mr Rutherford. He contended thai tho preat and growing exijenditure oil educat ion madoil neccssarv to look for some source of revenue other than taxation. If tho proposed endowments wero of small value, _as alleged, thc.v were not. worth (juan-oiling about, hut it was tho duly of tho Uovernment to make provision as- far as possible for the needs of education 1 , of old-age pensions, and or charitable aid. In regard to public works, ho laid it down a>s a safe policy to borrow a million a. year. That, would mean redttoing the number of works to lie carried on, but in tho end tho settlors would get. their railways and other works all Ihe sooner. Mr Cray, 'M.H.R., also spoke, advocating proceeding .with main lines of railway ratfvr than small brunches.
