The detectives' room at the Christchurch Police Station presented a strange appearance on Thursday evening. The door was lumbered up with wooden cases fdled with bottles, empty bottles loosen soniq tumblers, and some tins of preserved fish, Hard by reposed a new American axe; in a corner lay three pairs of men's and cno pair of ladies' boots, and two pairs of babies' shoes', and a box containing several pounds of tobacco, and some cigars. These constituted a haul that Detectives Ward and Bishop made at the railway goods shed. They happened to see the axe, and recognised it as one of three missing from a large consignment. This clue they followed up, and about 11 o'clock arrested a man. on a charge of having stolen tha articles.
