TAPANUI POULTRY ASSOCIATION.

ANNUAL SHOW. President, Mr P. Hay; vice-president, Dr W. liobertson; secretary ami treasurer, Mr A, Mmiyard; comimltec--Mossrs G. Giant, W. Quin, J. L. Wylie, D. Murray, John Campbell, P. M'Cami, AV. 11. Quin, £. Braudigam, and A. Jolly. ,'Xho eighteenth annual show of tho Tapanui List-riot Poultry Association was opened in the Town Hall on Friday afternoon under most favourable auspices, the weather being all that ono could desire, and the quality of tho exhibits being well up to show standard. Ample room for the exhibits was afforded by tho building, and all' the arrangements were carried out in a manner which could not Tail to please the public, gratify the birds, and satisfy their owners. Tho entries for last year constituted a record for the association, aiid •those received for this year are only a few less than the number received on t.hat occasion, -which roust be regarded as highly satisfactory in tho light of the' falling-off experienced Ijy soma of tho country societies, rile show was opeJi again in t|w» evening and all (lay on Saturday, when thero was a good attendance of country people, and on both days Mr P. Ilurke, the Government poultry grader, gave ah exhibition of poultry dressing for. the edification of district fanciers, which was much appreciated.

foghorns -were the feature of. the show and were strong numerically and as far as the quality of the birds was concerned; Of the Whites the cocks wore fair. The winning hen was placed on type and colour, and being splendid in head points was well furnished. The second and third birds were close up. Unfortunately allowance had to be made for the winning cockerel, ffhic.li had been much damaged iii transportation from Invcrcargill. Ho was a promising bird of tho true foghorn type, and ho won on eariage, furnishing, and head points. The second cookcrel was also tho worse for wear, and failed to tho winner in meanness of comb and lobe. ■" The three placed pullets were "the finest I have ever seen together," said tho judge; "and they evidently are sisters. Competition was bo keen between first and second that I found it necessary to score-eard them in order to arrive at a- decision, with the result that tho winner was successful by one point only. They were both beautiful in type, furnishing, size, an<l colour. The'winner was slightly tetter .in.comb and showed absence of thumb mark." It was to the winning pullet that tho South Island Poultry Association's chompionship for" white foghorns was awarded, and Mr Kobcrtson lias all the more reason to feel pleased with his win in such a. close competition. The best of the browns was a cockerel which was good, though a little deficient in type. Eosc-eombs were very small. "Breeders will hive to get more size into these birds, and also maintain the true type of the Leghorn," added Mr Roilly. ]„ Game the black-reds were, not satisfactorily classed with tho exception of the winning cockerel, which had good reach'-and colour. A fine cockerel was also shown .in the Indian game that took honours for the best game in the show. The best of the bantams was a black-red cockerel with a good reach, fino thigh, and that was of sound type and good carriage. Duokwings Were fair, the cockerel being 'a little dull in colour. Plymouth Reeks were also fair ill all classes, a barred heii being prominent," which won on type and cyerl barring though it was a trifle smoky on the back. The winning cockerel was deficient in under colour and a trifle hollow in chest. Though making a small entry, Spanish were exceptionally good, the winning cockerel being fit to compete in any show in the colony. He was of wonderfully good <ro!otir alid splendid carriage. The lions and pullets were also good. The show of Minorcas was poor on the whole, and Andalusians fair, the cock being of nice quality. The most prominent, bird in the fongsban classes was the fitst cock, which showed fine symmotry and good head points. In Brahmas the winning cock was very good, and lie also won the special for best local'bird. Dorkings worn very fair. The silver Wvandottes were good, the best bird perhaps being a pullet, nice and open in (he lacing, good in wing, head points, and breast, and fair in type. _ The golden Wyandotte cock Was a fine bird, very oven in colour, and with good head points. "Whites' were Mrcng in breeding ant! quality, and the winning cock was awarded the prize for the best bird in the show—a bird of splendid type, size, colour, carriage, and he was set on a fine pair of legs. Hens, cockerels, and pullets were distinctly above the average. The feature of the variety was fruencss to type and whiteness in feather. In Partridgo tho winning cockerel was good on colour, type, and size. Golden-pencilled Hamburgs were really good. " the pick of the bunch " being a pullet, correct to type, with beautiful plumage, ahd evenly serrated—a smart, active, little bird. The Silvers were also of excellent duality, and Orpingtons were of especial merit. "Some of the birds only want age to make them really first class" added the jiul s «. Tho winning black pullet, was shown in •capital condi-tion-close in feather, with a nice head and fine buck. A particularly rood cockerel was shown in the Muffs, will, splendid under and top colour, his onlv fault beiti* a little, shortness in type.
