LANCASHIRE AND YORKSHRE SOCIETY.
The members of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Society held their annual meeting last evening in the Trades Hall. In the absence of the president (Mr Pilkington), Mr W. Tnylor occupied the chair. Tho Sccrclnry (Mr Fryc) read tho report, the substance of which was as follows:— 'During the past year the society has belli two general meetings, eight basket socials, and four committee meetings. Though the general meetings were well attended, the basket socials have proved more successful, and, by special renuest, it was decided to continue them. Kverything has gone on from beginning to end in an entirely satisfactory maimer. While the membership has increased somewhat during the year, yet, judging by the number who attend our meetings, it is not so large as might be expected. An active canvass, however, is to be made to remedy the deficiency, and a system for the purpose of controlling the invitation of members' friends is to be inaugurated. Our president, after an absence of 40 years from the Old Country, is now on his wav to visit, his native land, and the good wishes of the society go with ltim. It was suggested at last annual meeting; that arrangements might be made for picnics durinT the summer months, but the season proved very unfavourable; moreover, it was decided to wait, until the society was stronger, Special thanks are duo-to the junior members for their instrumental and musical items at tho various meetings, and to members and friends who also assisted; also to the two pianists for their valuable services during the year, The balance sheet showed a credit of £2 5s lOd.
The Chairman, in addressing the meeting, stated that tho society had now been in operation for three years, during which time it had done a good work in bringing people of the especial counties in question together. Moreover, it provider] n reception for those immigrating from the Old Country, 'and did something in tho way of helping to find work for them. Tho Chairman then went on to speak of the Lancashire and Yorkshire people, instancing some of the great statesmen those, counties had produced. Finally he paid a tribute lo Mr Fryc. (lie soorolfirv. and eulogised the work done by that gentleman.
The following officers were then elected for the ensiling year:—President. Mr W. Taylor; vice-presidents, Messrs Terry and Chnppi'll; secretary and treasurer, Mr ('. Frve; enmmitlee—Mr pud Mrs Ans'dl. Mrs Taylor. Mr :md Mrs Mnyall. Mr and Mrs Aitkcn. Mrs Wye. Mr and Mrs lieasley. Mr and Airs Jackson. Mrs West. Misses Brown and Donaldson, and Mr.E.
During the evening Mr W. Taylor enlivened the proceedings with a song in the Lancashire dialect. M l ' Frve read a humorous select inn. am! Miss Black mill Mr Goodwin recited. The floor was then cleared for dancing.
